- OwenThe blueprint for almost all 90's indie rockOne last chance to get it all wrong! The seminal 'Mats album, now with a full concert disc recorded in 1984. And yes, it's every bit as chaotic as the band legends say.
- finnbogi marinossonClassic albumFantastic album. Hands down a 5 star one. But the life material does not sound very good, sadly. Comparing to the Stiff Little Finger box and live material there that sounds almost perfect. Both released on 21. of November.
- girltrollfeetDon’t Sell or Buy, It’s Crap!Diehard fans will understand the reference of my review title, and it applies here, mostly. If you already have the Rhino CD reissue from 2008, you have what you need. Any important extras were included there, and the improvement of this remaster over that version is negligible. The differences here are some forgettable studio outtakes and demos that do not really add to the set, unlike the other recent reissues. What you are paying for are some new liner notes and a surprisingly sober audience recording from Chicago in 1984 (B-). The package would be improved if it were created in the same style as the previous boxsets. On a positive note, in listening to the extras again, you can hear the path they were on towards Tim and some of the studio banter proves once more that they were smarter than they led us to believe.
- A. WoodleyGreat music but poor qualityGreat album but poor quality. I have mixed feelings on Rhino. When they are good, they are good but I have had a number of quality issues over the past few years. I am on my third copy of this deluxe set. Every single copy has a badly bowled and warped disc 3. This is an expensive set. Quality should be there. I’m giving it one more go and if I can’t get a decent copy, I won’t be keeping one.
- Stew MagnusonWhat a ripoff! At long last, the 40th anniversary edition that will make me stop wasting my money on 40th anniversary editions. I actually asked for and got this for Christmas, but I should have asked for a lump of coal. It would have been more useful. My two-star review has nothing to do with the brilliant original album, of course. But rather the extras.
There are a couple of interesting covers on the extras disc. But nothing I'll ever go back to and listen to again. The live recording had terrible sound quality. Where did they dig this up? It sounds like a bootleg taken from a cassette tape sitting in a shoebox in someone's a closet for 40 years. And the person recording it was hiding out in a toilet stall. Those responsible for issuing this should be embarrassed. - Amazon CustomerDon't Buy This For The Bonus Material But For The Great AlbumGreat Album The Bonus Material Is Disappointing
- R. HiteshewA regrettable retreadOne of the most disappointing overhyped releases you’ll ever see.
The new remaster does nothing, adds nothing, is hardly noticable.
Pretty much all the decent demos and outtakes have already been released.
The live show is a horrible recording of a sloppy, uninspired performance.
Give this one listen on a streaming service and you’ll never open it again.
Zero stars.
