  • The album that changed everything.
Good Apollo is the album that changed everything for me. This is the third album in a sequence of four, coming afterThe Second Stage Turbine BladeandIn Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3. Coheed is a themed progressive rock band, with their first five albums telling the story of a larger, science fiction opera. (Coheed and Cambria are actually characters within the story.)

Coheed and Cambria's first two albums had a lot of promise, but subsequent albums like Good Apollo serve to build upon them and put them into perspective. Good Apollo served as their most polished album to date, and had roots much deeper in heavy metal than the first album. "Welcome Home" is one of the best showcases on the album of exactly what the band can accomplish, and is a fitting precursor to their subsequent albums. I would recommend it as a starting point. This song is an anthemic throwback, displaying notable elements characteristic of both Led Zeppelin's Kashmir and mid-career Metallica.

By incorporating an underlying story in their music, C&C manage to do something that few bother to do today: they focus on writing an entire album. Many bands today put out collections of songs on each disc, but when you listen to a C&C album you get the ups and down, and highs and lows of a complete musical story. This gives their music a quality reminiscent of the earlier days of classic rock and metal, with a modern twist.

It is important to note that a lesser band would find themselves getting stuck in such a theme. I could imaging how it would be easy to get lost in the story, and having the music suffer by becoming campy. Yes, you can get sucked into the story as well (believe me, I have), but can just as easily sit back and enjoy the rock spectacle without regard for the back-story.

Some get put off by Claudio's singing voice. His primary mode of singing is a very high falsetto that is reminiscent of vocalist Geddy Lee (even though the band has stated that they weren't heavily influenced by Rush). While this has given some of their earlier tracks a more pop-rock feel, it doesn't hinder the guys from absolutely rocking out.

Even if you didn't like Turbine Blade or In Keeping Secrets, fans of rock or metal would be well advised to give this album a listen. It is possible that it will give you a different take on the band, and on their earlier efforts.
  • A great album, through and through
A fantastic album, though I’ve known about it for sometime I’ve never really listened to it in full until just recently. I still remember the first time I saw Claudio and the rest of Coheed and Cambria, way back in the mid 2000’s when The Suffering music video was playing regularly on MTV. Definitely a must own album if you like rock or progressive rock of any kind. I’m intrigued to go back and listen to some of the earlier albums as well and get a greater sense of the plot.

As far as the contents go…there is a little left to be desired. I believe this is a newer pressing of the album, so no slipcase is included. I also noticed that for whatever reason, the edges of the CD felt a little bit sharper than some of the other CDs I have in my collection. I’m tempted to look for an older copy on eBay or somewhere else just to see if my suspicions are right. Plus, I would get the iconic slip case. My CD arrived in a standard mailer from Amazon, so not in a box or anything. There is a small crack on the back of the album case. I don’t believe this is the sellers fault, it was still shrink wrapped and everything, and ordering CDs on Amazon can sometimes be a hit or miss. Though there was no parental advisory sticker on my CD, this is the explicit version, so nothing missed there.

I don’t really feel it’s worth taking a star off for the lack of a slipcase, nor the quality or condition the CD arrived in. The CD plays perfectly, and I got the explicit version that was listed. I just wish the stock photo would be updated.
  • Is this the same band that played the backdoor in Nyack?
It's been a strange journey for this NY band. After starting out in rockland county NY as Shabutie, playing an unconventional style of rock eventually getting them signed to Equal Vision Records, Unleashing 'Second Stage Turbine blade' and 'In Keeping secrets of Silent earth: 3', which eventually got them signed to Columbia records and garnered them radio and huge amount of video play, one might wonder what the next logical step for this record was going to be? The album's theme aside, this is their most well crafted album to date. The guitars are layered and multi tracked more than the almost empty sound from previous records. The bass sounds more full, and the drums have more pizzazz to them. The addition of an actual string section on songs like "Wake Up" and the newly re-done intro show you the band have stepped it up a notch. Production wise on this album, the band stuck with the team that has gotten them thru their 2 previous records, and it sounds as if they are bonding with the band, with clever effects here and there. Vocally this is the best performance yet out of Claudio, judging by past performances over the last year or 2, he definetly has seen a vocal coach. There is a lot more lead work on this album making it more epic, however it hasn't lost the melodic charm of riffs styled like that of 'In keeping secrets...' I would have to say my favorites are definetly "Welcome Home", "10 speed(of God's blood and burial)", "Apollo 1:The Writing Writer", and The entire Willing well quadrilogy". It took me a while to get into the disc, but after seeing a live performance, the magic of the disc hit me, get ready for one hell of a ride. I'm giving this a 5.
  • Vinyl works well. Arrived protected.
The vinyl arrived in good order.

This album is a defining album for me. I love everything about it. The music, the lyrics, the world-building.
  • Tarantula
Bought a boombox and listen to it over and over again.
  • Record plays well
Solid vinyl that plays well. Arrived quickly and decently packaged, but no perfectly. Vinyl was in a box within a box without any padding/stuffing to keep it from rattling around.
