Top reviews from the United States

  • You need one.
I run either a Boss GT-1000 or ElevenRack for live and studio work (no AxeFX for me...few monies, much sad).

For practice, this thing is fantastic. You only get nine effects in your chain (including an EQ and compressor) and some of those are linked so they turn on and off together, but for $80 US, it is a steal. It sounds fantastic through headphones, or direct to PA...it can be weird through an amp unless you put it through the effects loop or turn off modelling feeding it into the guitar input (just like any other ordinary pedal).

The distortions and delays may not be on par with a QuadCortex, but they are a far cry better than anything you could pay 80 bucks for even a few years ago.

The fact that you can run it off a healthy phone battery pack is amazing...and if you use a USB-C data cable and a guitar pedal center negative 9V wall wart instead you can record with your phone using BandLab in stereo from it! It also meshes fine with Reaper on a PC.

This thing is tiny...the same size as the "Elegoo, Donner, Glarry, Amazon", etc. branded single effect pedals. Perfect to throw in a gig bag with your picks and cables, and it is a functional backup if your main rig goes down. Just make sure you are either good with mono, or you have a 1/4" TRS cable and your board or amp will take stereo input that way...

This thing is super easy to program with the Bluetooth connection and app...just don't try to use Bluetooth live...if you drop the connection (and you will drop the connection) the until locks up and has to be restarted. That's fine when you are setting up patches, but would suck during a gig.

I used the BT and app to get my patches fine tuned, and got the order programmed, then it's simple to step through as needed.

The tuner is functional, but not as nice as a Snark Super Tight.

That isn't even touching the fact that it can use IRs and NAM profiles (the NAM capture has to include amp and cab...this won't do IR and NAM together) as well as the onboard effects and amp modelling.

Given the price, portability, and flexibility, I am more than good with the limitations. This little guy is now my go-to practice rig for places where I have to be quiet and compact like hotel rooms or friends' houses. A cell charger, 1/4" cable, 1/4" to 3.5 mm adapter, and some earbuds and you are up and running...everything fits in your gig bag or case no problem. Buy one now! Heck, I'm probably going to buy another one so one can live in the gig bag and I can use the other one in the studio. Why not?
  • Big Sound Micro Device
The hype is true. This little guy rocks. My main live rig is a Kemper Stage pedal and though I have no intention of replacing it, I’ve been on a quest to find something easier to carry on flights or take to rehearsals. I first bought a Tonex One, which is amazing but lacks a ton of features found on the Valeton. The GP-5 has a beautiful little full color screen, tons of effects, amp models and the ability to import NAM and IR’s. Sound quality is excellent and the ease of use (with the Valeton app) is great. The included presets tend to be over processed for my taste but are easily edited with the Valeton phone app. Though there are a ton of effects, they aren’t stellar but usable. I had no problem loading stock NAM amps and a few IR’s and all work fine. Paired with the Chocolate Plus pedal, I’m able to have 8 banks of 4 amps, in whatever combination I select, regardless of where they are located on the GP-5. Paired with the inexpensive, compact, Chocolate Plus, I can scroll up and down the banks and select sounds. Meanwhile, I have the foot switch on the GP-5 set to turn the effects for each amp, on and off. Amazing. The onboard tuner works well, is beautifully displayed and easy to see. The only thing lacking for me is the ability to use multiple expression pedals. Apparently, there is a way to use one with the Chocolate Plus. I haven’t tried that yet but, will update when I do. At a price that’s less than most tuner pedals, this device is outstanding.
  • Incredible value - like a basic NAM capture player for $80
The Valeton GP-5 is an amazingly valued piece of gear. Not all of its features will appeal to everyone, but if even a few them do, you’re essentially looking a full modeler and multi-FX unit in the size of a micro pedal…and powered off a USB-C power bank. It would be impossible to cover everything so here’s a few highlights of my impressions.

    APP INTEGRATION & WORKFLOW:
For both the good and the bad, the GP-5 is heavily reliant on a phone amp connected by Bluetooth. The two knobs and the screen on the pedal really do not allow for much editing at all. You can scroll through presets and adjust the volume – that’s it. So, in that way, this is not really meant to compete with a full-size modeler, such as a HX Stomp, Mooer GE300, and so on.

Fortunately, the app itself is very good, and allows everything from reordering your signal chain to uploading Impulse Response (IR) files and NAM Captures to the pedal (off your phone or iCloud storage). You long-press the PARA button to activate BT, load the app, and you can get to work. I do wish you could build signal chains with the device not connected, but that would be difficult, given that everything depends on files actually stored on the GP-5. Sometimes, I’ll just boot it up next to me connected to a USB power bank and make changes on my phone while watching TV.

    BUILT-IN SOUNDS:
The Valeton’s own amp and cab sounds do not rival something like Helix, but they were better than I expected. Most of the classic amp types are there, and they are convincing and dynamic. Plus, you can pair them with your own IR files (up to 20, I believe), and that makes a huge difference.

With respect to effects, it’s a mixed bag, but there’s enough “decent” there to make this an exceptionally useful unit without hooking up any external gear. The drive and modulation choices are limited, and sound good, but not great. The compressors are touchy, but there’s a Keeley and an optical one that cover most of the bases. Some of the reverbs and delays are actually pretty good! The Spring isn’t the best, but neither would it be if this were a standalone $80 reverb pedal. The Plate is very good, and they have others covering subtle room effects and more ambient sounds.

    HEADPHONE FUNCTIONALITY:
One of the best features of the GP-5 – similar to the $180 Tonex ONE – is that you can plug headphones in to the output jack and have a great practice experience with a full signal chain. This is where having access to all of those effects blocks is so important, even if they aren’t the best effects you’ve ever heard. The GP-5 excels for practice into headphones or small speakers, and can also serve as backup option for gigging musicians who need to go straight to a PA or mixer.

    NAM CAPTURE FUNCTIONALITY:
NAM, “Neural Amp Modeler”, is an open-source technology for capturing amps, effects, and entire signal chains. The gear community was shocked to find out that this $80 pedal can store up to 80 NAM captures and load them on the device…sort of. What the GP-5 actually does is convert NAM’s into their own proprietary capture format, which I believe they call SnapTone. There has been some testing as to how accurate these captures are to a traditional NAM player, but they sound pretty good to me, and as a budget/practice options, they are excellent.

NAM captures can be downloaded at the Tone3000 website as a free resource, and there are premium option available from several vendors for purchase, as well. I recommend the free options from “Plug and Play Tones” and the free and paid options from Matt Fig. However, it should be noted that while most NAM files will load onto a GP-5, the pedal does not have the processing power to load both a NAM capture AND a cabinet simulator (such as an IR) file. Therefore, you either need to load the NAM files called “Full Rig”, or expect to use the “Amp Head Capture” files into other gear that provides cabinet simulation.

    CONCLUSION:
As an owner of Tonex products, it is exciting to be able to check out a whole different library of NAM captures at such an affordable entry price. While I would not say that the quality and usability of the NAM captures on the GP-5 equals the Tonex experience, the GP-5 has certain advantages in the realm of effects and the app integration. I think that if you’re a newer guitarist or on a budget and hoping simply to play guitar through headphones or whatever speaker you have laying around at home (via audio cable), the GP-5 would be hard to beat as a total package.
