- Mr ECrams a lot of functionality into a small form factorOk, I'm new to Sonicakeproducts and wasn't expecting this thing to cram so much functionality into such a small box while keeping the price point sensible. I've only had it for a few days and so i haven't discovered everything it can do, but the ability to jump between amp models and try out effects with my telecaster has been a lot of fun. I have a big vox tube amp and can upset my family when i crank it, so one of the main draws to this particular pedal was its ability to act as a headphone amp. In that capacity it delivers a surprisingly full sound through **wired** headphones, letting you explore a wide range of styles without disturbing anyone nearby. That said, i did find the headphone volume very inconsistent between settings. Some presets were really loud at 50%, particularly those with heavy overdrive and distortion, whereas the cleaner presets were still too quiet at 100%. For wireless audio i was unable to get the pedal to send audio to the app to play though Bluetooth headphones. I was able to get the backing drums on the app to play through the headphones, but i suspect the drums are generated in the app and are playing straight from the phone rather than from the pedal. Hopefully I'll either discover I'm doing something wrong, or Sonicake will come up with a firmware update to smooth out these issues, at which point this will be a great stationary headphone amp.
In terms on other functionality, the built-in tuner is fast, accurate and i like the on screen visuals which help get me dialed in quickly. The menu system is far more intuitive than expected given the minimal control layout and navigating between presets, effects, and amp models feels natural after just a few minutes of use. Of course the app helps make that even easier. It gives the same functionality as the pedal, but it makes accessing the menus and changing parameters much quicker and easier and lets you leave the pedal on the floor and tweak settings without constantly bending over. Also, thanks to the developer for letting me just connect and play without needing to make an account! The other nice feature is the pedals ability to run on multiple power sources (internal battery, usb or 9v) so when i take it out of the house my odds to keep it powered are much higher than other pedals. Overall I'm very happy with the QME-20 and look forward to playing with it some more. - PBR GuitarBig Sounds, Small PackageGreat amp sounds, decent effect choices and a few good IRs built in. Easy to edit UI. The internal battery is a great feature I didn’t think I needed. I wish the Control Input wasn’t the first input as I regularly plug into that instead of the guitar input. Thought it had drum sounds but it’s just a metronome.
- HealthyArtistCompact, lots of effects options, intuitive to use, nice companion app, and great value. Recommend. This small Sonicake Smartbox is jam-packed full of choices. With 9 effect modules and more than 130 effects, I don’t know if I will ever try them all.
I’m new to the world of electric stringed instruments. I’ve always been a piano player. This whole world of pedals, amps, and whatnot is a little confusing to me. So, to get everything all in one small unit has definitely been the best choice for my newbie-level playing. The presets have been a lot of fun, and the app allows me to easily switch out and change the order of things. Playing with the drum options in the app has been super fun and one of my favorites.
The build of this device is sturdy. It’s very well made and thoughtfully designed. The buttons and knobs work intuitively. Everything is nicely labeled and easy to read and understand.
This device would be great for gigging musicians and would make a great gift for a guitar player in your life. The value is excellent at the current price of $94.99, especially when you compare it to a single pedal.
I’m quite happy with this Sonicake Smartbox and definitely recommend it. - Matt DamonPocket-Sized Chaos (In a Good Way)Alright so I’ve been messing around with this little guy for a few weeks now and wow... it’s way more fun than I expected. It’s got like a ridiculous amount of effects, and I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’ll be honest I got it just to tinker and maybe throw in my backpack for jams, but it’s turned into a solid part of my setup. The looper’s super handy, and I dig that it’s got a tuner and metronome baked in. Makes life way easier. It took me a hot sec to figure out the whole NAM/IR stuff, not gonna lie, but once you dial it in... oof. Sounds pretty dang legit. It’s small, light, easy to mess with, and just straight up fun. Honestly shocked it didn’t cost alot more.
