- AbbyChickens go Crazy for these!This is the best supplier of dried black solider flies as I can get an entire 5 pound bag for half the price of what it’s offered in big box stores. My chickens go crazy for these soldier fly larvae. However, they did not come in a re-sealable bag, which would have been better because then I could have kept the bag outside and wouldn’t have to worry about moisture or animals getting into the bag. Additionally, other brands have used a silica bag is included to absorb extra moisture and ensure the freshness of the larvae, but I didn’t notice one in this bag. There was no issues with moisture upon arrival.
These flies must be tasty because the chickens come running for them and gobble them up right away. I give my chickens about 1/4 of a cup of larvae a day to add to their calcium intake. Our hens are egg layers and this product helps with their egg processing because it supplies extra protein. The fly larva is freeze dried and the product looks just like larvae. A bag of larva flies lasts for about 2 to three weeks for 10 hens.

The prices have gone up a lot over the last few years. You get a bit of a discount on the bigger 10lb box if you can afford it. Not sure why worms are so expensive, maybe the drying process maybe something else?

When they were chicks I crushed them make a "tsk tsk" noise when feeding, now that they're older I just make the noise and they basically teleport to me.
I have about 5 chickens and a 5 LB box lasts me about 2 months. They are a decent size for grown chickens, if feeding chicks I would crush them up. Nutrition-wise they are a great protein packed treat.
