Since we use so many, we really are not loyal to one particular brand and generally purchase the lowest price with the best reviews.
That's how we ended up with this brand. Included was a bonus that we were not expecting.
We ordered (5) 11lb boxes this time. In one of the packages, we noticed that half the Freeze Dried Larvae were much darker than what we are accustomed to seeing, but paid it no real attention.
A few evenings after we started using the bag with the darker Larvae, we spilled about 40 or 50 Larvae on the ground, while filling our treat bucket.
That evening, it rained into the next morning. By the time we made it out to our feed house that evening to assemble their evening treats, we noticed a few dozen of the Dark Larvae on the side of our feed house. When we went to move them, we discovered that they were ALIVE.
Within a day or so, we had Black Soldier Flies hovering around the small pile of spillage that sits next to our feed house.
First time we have had this happen over several years. We are saving the balance of the Dark Larvae and have ordered a Soldier Fly enclosed breeding system that will produce Larvae and as long as this brand is available at this price, we will continue to purchase them.
Very durably packaged and sealed equaled a solid, healthy product where the Larvae were all intact with none crushed and were good and thick. Just be prepared for that familiar smell when you open them. They are very well sealed. - Roy DubsGood product at a fair priceGood product at a fair price.
- CBMgreat product, poor packagingThe product itself is loved by the ducks I foster. But oh, the packaging. It comes in a large but thin ziplock inside a printed-on carton. Neither can be reused, and recycling in many states has changed to no more. But even this one-time use can be ineffective. I moved the as-delivered closed package to the ground, and it immediately attracted ants that we usually don't even have in the garage. So, to customers: please consider placing this into a food-safe bucket that seals well upon receipt. One you can open and close quickly but that nothing else gets into. You will need more than one 5gl. To the seller: please reconsider packaging to make it sealing and possibly reusable.
