- Terri BWorks FAST melts ice & snow quickly!I bought a bag of Pelletts of Fire used it all so, I ordered the 50lb pail. The lid was a BEAST to get off but, I started spreading the pellets and I could hear the ice cracking as soon as the pellets made contact! Great product and I will be sure to NEVER run out of it again!
- CeciliaGood for poolsI bought this to raise the hardness in my pool. Pool stores sell the same stuff (CaCl2) for $3-4/lb, so when you need as much as I did it can be quite expensive.
This product appears to be pure Calcium Chloride as claimed, prill form, no sand or other obvious impurities. The expected amount raised my hardness as intended. I have no doubt this would work well for ice melt or dust control.
The bucket is a big plus. If you are familiar with DampRid, it’s the same stuff. Calcium chloride is very hydroscopic, and if you live in a humid environment it will tend to get clumpy, then watery then increasingly will disappear as it dissolved in the humidity. The bucket goes a long way to protect this. - Kristen C.Review after four years: An effective CaCl snow / ice melter in a convenient reusable bucketPellets of Fire work very well on driveways and walkways. They are small calcium chloride pellets in about the size of Nerds candy, and while less delicious tasting than Nerds, CaCl works effectively at melting and the pellets' small size maximizes coverage. After several years of using these, I feel confident saying that they were worth the money. Granted, the shipping is built into the price and the cost is a bit steep, but considering that a 20lb bag sells for about $20 at our local hardware stores, the cost was reasonable...especially in light of the included 50lb tightly resealing and reusable bucket. The best time to use this is at the beginning of a big snowstorm, after there is a coating of snow on the ground so it has something to react with and it doesn't blow away, but before the real heavy stuff starts piling on to block it from hitting the blacktop. If you get that down, shoveling becomes much less of a chore because the surface is melted from the melting / warming of the snow.
The included bucket is a huge bonus, allowing me to scoop out the pellets with a plastic cup and precisely spread them to conserve product but maximize coverage...using the pellets from a bag would always lead my spastic self to spilling or dumping piles of too much in areas of my driveway.
UPDATE 2/2019: Pellets of Fire is still working great for me. I’ve bought two buckets over the years and it works better than any other product I have tried. It stores nicely in the off-season and does not turn into one coagulated boulder of salt during the warmer weather, partly because it is calcium chloride and partly because of the tightly sealing bucket. - ACMAMelts fast.Shipped free with amazon prime. Arrived on time, no issues. Used on recent 12 January 2011 blizzard in New England. Worked as expected. Quickly melted ice layer after I cleared surface snow. Put on wet areas next day when warmer to avoid ice development overnight, and wet areas dried vice icing over. It is pearlized product vice angular and spread well with the simple hand held spreader. The spreader is available on Amazon and works well.Suncast SS025 Hand Held Spreader For Ice Melt/Sand/Salt Snow De-Icers
Some did spill on the garage floor and appeared to melt without any wetness so I'd keep this product tightly covered. The lid does open with a pull strip but then has four evenly spaced tabs which secure the lid to the container, even when I knocked it over. You do not need tools to unseal or reseal the container. Great price and can't beat not having to lug this thing from the store home. Bucket number 2 enroute as we speak. Have a wonderful winter.
Per packaging this product contains:

potassium chloride
sodium chloride
And as we all know Chlorides are "salts" - Bionic HedgehogQuality productThis is the first ice melting product I have ever purchased. After plowing through 7 ft of snow on my 100 ft driveway using my Green Works snow blower (which works great, BTW), I spread a generous layer of these pellets on the residual icy snow at the bottom. Within the next couple of hours, I had the cleanest looking driveway on my street. I did not have any refreezing issues overnight. I am not sure how careful I need to be about keeping the box tightly closed. It has been open most of the time in my outdoor garage and I have had no issues. Now I have half a mind to throw some of these guys up on the roof and in the gutters.
Update: second winter with same bucket
Just finished the remainder of the same bucket after today's 3 inches of Chicagoland snow. It still works well enough after an year. - Phil O.BEWAREThese are not pellets in the normal terms. These are grains of calcium chloride about the size of a grain of sand. If your roof is icy or frozen snow these roll right off . The assumption by most people are that these are compressed pucks of calcium chloride either large ( like for a pool) or smaller. These, in my opinion are useless if you want to toss on the roof to create melting channels in ice dams.
- Amazon CustomerClears left-over snow and iceI have been using this ice melt on my driveway and steps. It worked great to finish clearing a thin layer of snow that was left from the plow. The places that were already covered with ice needed treatment a couple of extra times. I like that it is a very large container that should last for a couple of years, and I liked the convenience of having it delivered right to my door. The lid was extremely difficult to open the first time. I needed to use pliers to remove some of the rid sections of plastic seal. I still find it really difficult to open the lid, because it seals so securely with tight closures in four places. I have been using a screwdriver to pry off the lid. The secure seal is a good thing, though, because I don't expect moisture and summer humidity to get in the container and harden the pellets in the summer months. The reason for just three stars is because I have found such better prices. I did not shop around enough, but it works well.
