- Michael AtkinsonHappy birdies! It is a really great fountain. Works really well and the birds seem to love it! Great buy!
- dragon6473Bright Sun Busy Birds Simple Solar Bird Bath FountainI bought this to keep my bird bath lively without dealing with cords or batteries. The solar powered setup promised quick starts in direct sun, and the claim about attracting hummingbirds was a nice bonus. The option to swap nozzles gave me something to play with as the bath size and sun conditions change.
In everyday use, I filled the bath with clean water and set the pump in place. In direct sun it starts within a few seconds and the spray appears almost instantly. The built in retainer keeps the pump centered, so the stream stays in the bath instead of splashing over the edge. I experimented with the six nozzles to switch between patterns, and for a smaller bath I found that using no nozzle cut down on splash nicely.
What stood out is how simple it is to set up and how reliably it runs in sun. The different spray styles are actually useful for changing the look, and the bubbler option helps keep water from splashing out when space is tight. It requires clean water and regular topping up, but there are no cords to manage.
One small note is that it does not work at night or on cloudy days and it relies on direct sunlight. Also I learned to keep the water level adequate to protect the pump. Despite that, the overall effect is pleasant and the birds seem to enjoy the movement and aeration. Overall, it’s a 5-star addition to my garden. - Jerry K.Requires Constant Attention During Breezy ConditionsReally like the solar-powered approach, but found I have to keep refilling the bird bath under breezy conditions, as the wind continuously blows the water out the bath and the sprinkler stops. Will use only during still conditions.
- G. GeorgeWorks as described...almost!This is tough because the fountain works pretty much as it is described and it has lasted over a year of basically non-stop, continual use during spring, summer and fall seasons in Ohio.
We are using this in a 27" bird bath that gets full sun exposure for ~8 hours a day, then is partially shaded in the late afternoon and evening.
So why only 3-stars? Primarily for understating the flaws...
1. The note in the description about the spray height being directly related to the sunlight intensity is an understatement to say the least! The ONLY time you will see tall spray like in the pictures is when there is complete full sun exposure with absolutely ZERO obstruction. Slight haze from a humid summer day?...nope, that's not enough sun. Now, with that said, it does run when there is little to no sun, but it's just a trickle. That's enough to keep the water agitated, but not much else, and that has served it's purpose for us at least.
2. The description mentions "a larger birdbath is recommended to prevent splashing out of the birdbath". Again, that's quite an understatement! We have what I would consider a fairly large bird bath at 27 inches in diameter, but on the rare occasions we have enough full sun, anything but the flat spray nozzle will result in most of the water being sprayed out of the bath onto the ground. If even a slight breeze picks up, then most of the water ends up on the ground and in a matter of minutes the bird bath is empty! So I'm not sure what bird bath would be big enough to use the other tall spray nozzles unless it's a small pond. Also, keep in mind that it floats, so it hardly ever stays in the exact center of the bath; so even with a huge bird bath, it would eventually float to the edge and you would end up with the same problem.
3. Finally, the thing is a magnet for algae and debris. It's not necessarily hard to clean, but it does require frequent (basically daily) cleaning. Because the entire surface area of the fountain is in constant contact with the water, I think it also makes the water get dirty faster as well.
4. I don't think the birds care about the fountain. They use the bird bath, but I have never seen them use the fountain's spray - partly because we use only the flat nozzle just to keep the water agitated and provide a little sound, and nothing more; so there is rarely any spray for them to play in.
To sum up... we've been relatively happy with the fountain and the limited functionality that we get out of it, but are looking for other, non-fountain options that will run more consistently and have less surface area contacting the water, but still provide the sound and agitation we want. But if you have no wind and no clouds and a gigantic bird bath and don't mind taking it apart everyday to clean, this fountain will work for you! - Barbarabirds love itworks great and have tried various heads
- LindaOkLove it when it works. Only works in direct sun. Any amount of shade & it quits working. And I mean even if a leaf covers it it won’t work. Also it Really goes though water. You gotta have a deep well of water or it’s out & also won’t work. But when everything it perfect I do like it. I also like that it comes with different nozzles for different effects.
- Teresa CullenVisually looks so nice in the yard.My sister loves it.
- PogoNot great, but okay for the price.Well, it works, sort of. Pumps nicely in bright sun, fairly weak on cloudy days, early morning, late evening.
After a few months the plastic over the solar panels start to oxidize and turn white and it slowly dies, then you have to take a scouring pad to clean it off. Don't know how many times you can do this, but it's fairly easy and buys you a few more months.
