- CalichefBest Veterinary Find Since Hybrid Elizabethan Collars!Dogs LOVE these! My Dot is very healthy and, except for antibiotics for a tiny scratch on her cornea, Dot has never had any pills. Not only does she hate pills, she won't even eat her heartworm meds that come in a chewy treat every other dog or cat I have ever had ate quite willingly. However, her mate, Dash, has epilepsy and needs two pills per day-- every day-- for life. Dot feels like she is special, too, if she gets half a pill pocket when Dash gets his pill in half of a large pill pocket.
In my 50 years of AKC kennel ownership I have tried EVERYTHING from cheese hot dogs, to scrambled eggs with cottage cheese, to Little Smokies sausages, to soft cheeses to liverwurst to get dogs to take their pills!
These pill pockets are BY FAR the EASIEST and most mouldable pill hiding food/treat I have ever found, and they seem like an excellent value (and fewer kilocalories) when compared to soft cheeses or liverwurst!
If the Pill Pockets are kept in an airtight container these pill pockets remain soft and perfect for a LONG TIME, maybe years. Not that I have ever had a bag of Pill Pockets last over a month! The only thing about Pill Pockets that is at all fragile is the zipper on the bag they come in. There is no guarantee on the bags, or the zippers on the inside of the bags.
I buy the large pill pockets and cut them in half for my Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and use them whole for our allergic German Shepherd dog's THREE Benedryls per six-hour dose, (my dose is TWO.) This is my BEST veterinary find since the hybrid elizabethan collars that have blowup neck rings AND a hard, clear plastic anti-chew extension! - CarrieGreat idea to hide pills inGreat product. These actually hide the pills from my picky dog. Taste is great for him and they smell like peanut butter. Great value and easy to use.
- Love2swimMy dog loves these “treats”My dog does not like taking pills or capsules of any kind. It goes in her mouth and she quickly spits her medicine out. With these pill pockets, it is very easy for her to take. I put her meds in the pocket and she gobbles them up as if they are a treat. She used to run when I told her that it was time for her medicine. Now she comes running when it’s medicine time. She loves the flavor!
- PittieMomA necessity for meds! Our dog has two daily meds he has to take as well as occasionally another one (for anxiety). He is pretty good about taking them every morning however he was starting to get a little smart and he no longer liked them covered in dog safe PB. Deli meat and hot dogs are okay for the occasional meds but I didn’t want to give him things too high in sodium for daily meds.
I never tried these pill pockets before but has heard good things from others who used them for their dogs.
They have worked great! They are so easy to use and som times I can get two pills in one pocket so it saves $$ haha!
Additionally, my dog has GI issues and… no diarrhea or stomach issues with taking these! Wooohooo! That’s a big plus for us. It’s nice that they have a non chicken flavor option for those who have pups with chicken allergies or sensitivities.
I think the price is pretty great for how long they last for us. We can usually get about a month and a half out of a bag. - KWThey work! They really work!My dogs love these! There are different flavors, but my dogs seem to be happy with any of them and haven’t gotten tired of them for several years now. They look like soft, tan, smushy treats that you mush around the pill(s). For my 20lb dog I can usually use one and break it up for several pills, so that saves me from using them up quickly. As long as the pill isn’t too big, my dogs will take them and swallow them. I have a pill cutter that I use to break in-half larger pills. Their durability after being spit out is difficult once they are wet. It’s pretty slimy and hard to mold again, so at that point I might add some more or use a new piece to mush around it, but overall they work great!
One trick I use if my dog chews it up and spits it out, is to have several tiny pieces that I don’t put anything in and I give one to her and she chews it and is convinced it’s just a treat, and then she accepts the next one with the pill inside.
My other trick is to make them do tricks for them and it fools my dogs bc they try to eat them very fast if they are getting it for a trick. - Kim, wonMakes Giving Pills So Much EasierThese pill pockets work really well for my dog—he usually spits pills out, but with these he just thinks it’s a treat and eats it right away. The peanut butter smell definitely helps.
Only reason I’m giving it four stars is because the pockets can start to dry out if I don’t seal the bag tightly. Not a huge issue, but something to keep in mind.
Overall, they make medication time a lot easier, and I’d buy them again. - LibellulaSo worth it for us!!These are great. Our large bully has to take allergy medication multiple times a day. We tried peanut butter (messy), cheese (pills fell out). These things work like a charm. I can break one into 4 pieces and put a pill in each (think small caplet) and he swallows them right down. So much easier.
- MeganDogs Love the TasteI got these to give my one dog pills in. This had made it so much easier than forcing them. The best part is both my dogs love the taste. My other dog that doesn’t even get pills in hers loves them so much she follows me at around the time I normally give them and won’t leave me alone until she gets hers. She has never even been a big treat lover but is obsessed with these. They’re a little pricey but worth it to make pills easier to give.
