- Kid DocJust what the thumb orderedSo, I have an overuse injury of my left thumb (partial texting, partial bicycle riding, partial old hyper extension injury). What I need is to stabilize and decrease motion of the thumb so it can rest and heal. My original injury used to be called a gamekeepers thumb (although my tendon is not avulsed). Since I believe in staying with name brands I tried this brace and one by Ace. Both are comfortable, both help remind me not to overuse the thumb, and both have stays, but this one allowed for more flexibility in adjusting the amount of support while still providing some thumb movement, but also really supports the wrist (necessary to adequately restrict the thumb). It also allows for more variation in how much support you create, but even in the looser adjustments still provides thumb support. This brace customizes its fit using velcro closures - 2 at the wrist and one over the thumb. This allows you to create a comfortable fit for the hand yet keep the thumb restricted. You don't need to tighten it way down over the hand (which squeezes the hand) to get the support you need. The stays used in this splint are long (extending from the wrist to over the thumb joint) and are shaped well to place the thumb in a natural but supported position. Compared to the Ace, this is a more robust device, provides much better support and will I think last longer thru washings and extended use. It is more bulky though. I thought about the Grey, but didn't see spending the extra money. In either case it will be obvious that you're wearing a device. I've seen some reviewers of these stability devices say that the device allows for support but continues to allow texting. News flash!. Getting over texting thumb requires stopping the use of your thumb for texting!!! So if that's your goal (to continue texting) this is NOT the device for you because it actually works to restrict the thumb motion in a manner that makes texting difficult to do. In other words it does what it's supposed to!! From a sizing perspective, I believe this device (compared to the Ace) provides more meaningful flexibility for obtaining a good fit with different sized hands. I'm an adult make with moderate sized (7.5 surgical glove size) hands, and there is still lots of adjustment potential both up and down.
Conclusion: I really like this device. If you're serious about rehabilitating your thumb injury, I think this is an excellent option. Mueller is a company that's been around a long time. My family has used their stabilizers for other joints as well. They still hold up. Give it a go!! - GuyGreat value and works wellComfortable and definitely stabilizes the thumb. Very easy to use and a great value.
- blaze17Sturdy Hand BraceFits well, easy to adjust, and feels supportive without being bulky. I can still use my hand for everyday tasks while wearing it. Good quality and comfortable to wear. Knocked a star off because it tends to collect lint easily.
- Wally3665Great quality for the priceGreat quality and easy to use. Relieves pain and has great support. Excellent value for the money! I've tried other brands from my medical provider that cost so much more. Would highly recommend this product
- YunsikGood supportGood brace, not just for sports. When I was playing games a lot I would get some shooting pain in my thumb. Got this brace to provide some support and it worked wonders when I was forcing myself to work through it. Obviously it’s better to rest up, but if you don’t, this is the ideal option.
- LadyboneyardFinally! For background, I broke delicate bones in both my hands in a near-fatal MVA. Since then, I have of coursed aged to the point at which I cause a small fire by the friction of the now-lengthy spinning to get to the year of my birth. (This is a little long, but I think it’s all necessary so you can really know the amount of destruction that’s been caused to my hands, since it’s so extreme.)
It’s been eight years since then, and I’ve lived in a horror movie, due to an emergency, I had to spend several days and months writing and typing more than any human should, I also developed arthritis, and the pain that’s borne from those events have caused me to be unable to get a good grip on things (literally and figuratively), I’ll often drop things and not even notice. I do not take otc painkillers regularly, and I will not take opiates, but with everything I am forced to do daily, I can’t get the chance to rest my hands, not even for an hour much less a few f days or a week.
And as it always does, another shoe dropped yesterday morning when I slipped in mud and landed directly on my thumb and forefinger of my left hand. The pain was indescribable.
I had an old thumb splint, and put it in. There was no metal in it, and as a result, trying to get it to the sweet spot where my thumb couldn’t move (any movement was painful), and I still had circulation in my hand.
In fact, I had only two options: a) live with the pain and keep blood circulating to my hand; or, b) tighten it to stabilize my thumb/hand and then wait for the gangrene. In either case, extreme pain was involved. It’s impossible to to make it fit properly and be comfortable, you can’t do it. Either it’s too loose and your hand is moving all the time, or you lose circulation, but your thumb is relatively stable. (This is a few years old, so maybe the kind I now bought are a new design).
I thought it was a long shot; since I’m a regular visitor to this site, but I did find these, and they offered overnight shipping, so I decided I’d give this one last try.
Since these arrived, I am telling you, without a doubt, that I have not had pain in my thumb at all. I can’t remember when I had no pain last. The metal made me nervous, and the part in which you put your thumb, you need to ensure goes around your thumb, but I am absolutely convinced.
The metal allows there to be a strong stabilizer, that will restrict movement of the thumb AND still feel comfortable.
I highly recommend these. I wish I’d had them long ago. A+++++!!! - Carla VExcellent!!!I ordered this product with same-day delivery. It's excellent, fits well, is lightweight, and allows for movement of the hand, wrist, and fingers, except for the thumb, so it does its job. Good price for the quality.
- Korey FechterNot comfortable for all day wear.Purchased for carple tunnel relief and it works well while sleeping and for short term use but becomes abrasive the longer it is worn.
