There are already batteries installed- the box batteries are extras. When twisting off the top, there is a white screen over the installed batteries but couldn’t get it off. I shook the flashlight and it came off that way. It’s just the paper separator to keep the installed batteries from connecting until your ready to use it.

Fast forward and the recipient LOVES it, and considers it an indispensable part of his tool bag. Best stocking stuffer ever. It’s located and grabbed many dropped screws and little metal parts, and the flashlite, though not great, is good enough to light nooks and crannies.
