- review incGreat Purchase!Best stud finder I ever purchased. Easy to use, works as advertised. No complaints.
- KurtEasy, multiuseEase of use and works well. Multiuse for finding studs(selectable widths) and electrical lines.
- Lyndonnot too shabby for the priceI usually find that electronics that have some weight to them tend to be of much better quality. On first impression this seemed a bit "hollow" to me. It doesn't come with a battery which is not surprising for the cost, but I always replace those that have "batteries included" with my own high end li ion batteries anyway. It lit up like it should. Felt better with a battery installed as far as weight goes. So then the testing started. First I will try it without instructions to see how user friendly it is. Placed it on a wall in which I knew was difficult to read with my old SF. I toggled through the modes and found it kind of interestingly confusing as to why it would have different depth settings. It found nothing on 1/2". Reset it to 1" and found nothing again. Then on 1-1/2" it found studs. It found the centers well. Then I tried it on an easy to sense wall. Same thing. the 1-1/2" works. I don't see why they would bother with the lighter settings. But it did accurately find the stud centers on the 1-1/2" mode. In fact it found them much easier than my old clunker which tended to error out. I call it my old clunker because this should be able to clunk around inside a drawer until needed and take the abuse. I'm not sure how well this one will hold up as I just got it. My old clunker cost much less and lasted me many years. 8 years from now I can tell you how this one does, but for now I have no review of that. Don't get me wrong. I take care of my tools. I don't abuse them. This one will be my go to stud finder until such a time it fails me without abuse. It seems relatively easy to use. You should not need to pull out an instruction manual every time you wish to use a tool. This did not require me to do any such thing. I could figure it out without problems. I just have to remember that it needs to calibrate first. So all that said, I am happy with the purchase and I think it is a quality tool for the price as long as you don't abuse it. It's made to read walls, not bounce off them. For the price, I'd try it if I were you and didn't need a $400 radar scanning tool, which you "would" have to treat like a fragile piece of glass. I rather like it.
- ed b.Great Product! As advertised. Very accurate, and well worth the cost.
- RussellWorked well after a little practiceI’m quite pleased with this stud finder. I have an older house with “plaster” and lath interior walls. However, the plaster is more like mortar and is very dense.
The instructions are fairly decent so take a minute to study them. I found the 1.5” setting worked well for my situation. For practice, pick a location with a wall socket. The outlet box will be attached to a stud, so you’ll know to look on either side. Once you get used to “finding” a stud in a known location, you’re ready to go. - AGMost Stud finders are junk. This one is maybe a little better than mostI've got a few stud finders around, and they are all generally terrible. I got this one because of all the positive reviews, and I can't tell if it's better because I just bought it and really want it to work, or if it is maybe a little better than the others I have around. On one wall, a junk stud finder found 3 studs which allowed me to map out the wall, this one found nothing. Can't really explain that as this one generally worked better on other walls (or so it seemed).
Here is the rundown on stud finders.......they all generally work OK in a home of newer construction, with very predictable and controlled thicknesses of drywall/paint, and newer studs that are in good contact with that drywall (no gapping..anywhere), ect. But, if you get into a home that is ~50+ years old, has had a few coats of paint, maybe a few previous owners did some DIY work that left some walls uneven or of varying thicknesses, ect, ect, ect...there is not a stud finder on the planet that will save you. You might get lucky and be able to isolate a stud location, then measure 16" increments to locate the rest of the studs in the wall, but there is simply no studfinder (I have found) that works well through a few coats of paint and 30 years of wall patching and weekend-warrior work. I have just not found one that really, really really works.
One feature on this device that does work well is the electrical wire locater. I was surprised at how accurate that was. - Lisa zookFinding those studsWorks excellent. Easy to use. Great for the price
