5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best lenses I own for Z9
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2024
This is hands down one of the best Z9 lenses. I have the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. I loathe my 24-70 lens. I hate the photo quality; grainy, poor clarity. One of the poorest pieces of glass I have owned. The 70-200 is fantastic, takes great shots, but is super heavy for traveling around with it, and I lose the lower mm shooting. So I purchased the Tamron with just the hope that I would like it better than the 24-70 and give me the lower mm again. This lens……WOW. It is crystal clear. Good bokeh. I have shot landscape, sunset/sunrise, graduation portraits, wildlife, storm photography and some astrophotography and it has been mind blowing in quality and composition. I took it on a 12 day vacation and used it the entire trip except for when I went birding and needed my telephoto lens. Lightweight, easy to travel around with, and the quality of the photos is amazing. Sharp and clear. The only glass I keep in my camera bag now are the Tamron and the Nikkor 100-400 with telephoto 2x converter for longer distance shots. The 24-70 and 70-200 just made themselves irrelevant. The above pic was shot on the Z9 with the Tamron lens, hour before sunset, on the beach. If you are on the fence, I would buy this lens over and over again. **this was my first non-Nikkor lens I have ever purchased.

Few weeks in and I am still in wow. Did they finally do it? A zoom lens of such quality? Yes they did. Amazon won’t let me post my watermarked images but the quality is beyond profession. I have used it indoors and outdoors. It’s tack sharp, and bokeh is plentiful. This lens has replace my entire camera bag. I am using it with Nikon Z8. Super combo!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well balanced lens - its a keeper

Just got through comparing this lens against my 70-200 Z on a Z7II and pleasantly surprised how well the Tamron kept up. Resolution at 70 and 150 ranges was literally the same with any differences in the noise as shots were indoors in lower light with flash. AF speed is very good with a slight nod to the Nikon zoom but due to the limits of the Z7 camera, the differences were not that great.
The key for me here is that the shorter length of the Tamron, with a lighter weight is much easier to manage than the 70-200. The extra 35mm on the low end at the expense of 50mm on the high end is a no brainer as I shoot mostly on the lower side of the 70-200 anyway.
I consider the 70-200Z to be a stellar lens but the Tamron is playing in that neighborhood. Quite impressive indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars versatile lens with some quirks, good IQ

I have been debating about this lens for awhile. Is it long enough, and is it wide enough? For probably 75% of the time it is, so i got it.

Focal length:
35mm at f2 and f2.8 at 150mm can be supper useful as a 1 lens deal for most situations. 50mm at f2.2, 70-mm f2.5, 85-100mm at f2.7, 135mm+ is f2.8. So it is practically a f2.8 starting 85mm.
I traded away my f mount Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 plus some to get this lens. I didn't use the 70-200 f2.8 as much as I expected. Plus the focus breathing on tamron 200mm looks more like 150-180mm, which isn't good. This Tamron I read has some of that focus breathing. if something is close it isn't much of a 150mm zoom. If the item is further away maybe,.
Is 35mm wide enough, I don't thinks so for indoor events, you might want 24mm to see the whole scene. So if I am doing an indoor event i might have to bring a wide angle lens too.

IQ (image quality)
+Overall I have no issues, looks sharp. I don't do test chart, just the final image.
+Dof (Depth of field) area, not as good as my f1.4 lenses, if you want more maybe shoot with the long focal length outdoor, but not if you are limited in space to stand. There are software that can make your Dof more narrower.
+Bokeh (the quality of the out-of-focus area - OoF) Looks normal, didn't test it at night for flare or starburst, I did shoot or shoot at tree leaves. It was overall smooth with a circular wide open. Not extraordinary or distracting.
+Built quality is typical Tamron, no issues, i have many Tamron lenses in the past, no issues. Not super heavy, but not light.
+Size, short than the most 70-200 f2.8, and longer than a Tamron/Nikon 28-75 f2.8

I will probably be the main lens I use going forward event photography. I got the nikon 180-600 for animal, wildlife. Still got bunch of 24-70 zoom for a walkaround. My 35, 50, 85mm f1.4 primes will be for the narrower DoF. Will carry a wide angle for indoor events with this. The price is a tad high for Tamron, but it is worth it for some event photography if you want to just use 1 body and lens for most of your shots. But not a perfect lens, just almost there. 4.5/5. Got mine at a local store so issues. My sample photos, 1 one image is shot at 35mm vs 1 at 150mm, so you can see the zoom image different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quickly became my most-used lens
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024
I bought this because I shoot a lot of live events at bars. The zoom range is perfect for covering the wide group shots or getting close-ups, and the image quality is outstanding-- just as good as the S-Line 24-70 and 70-200 it's replacing, and just a tad faster all the way on the wide end.

I've also found it useful on the sidelines-- when paired with a 100-400, the backup camera can handle the close-in action or the crowd reaction.

(If you're shooting with a straight 400, I've found the 70-200 to be a better partner-- the Nikon's noticeably faster with the autofocus, and that 50mm makes more of a difference than you'd think.)

The only negative thing I have to say about the lens is that sometimes 35 just isn't wide enough, so there's usually something that goes to 24 sitting in the bag. I typically am able to use a flash in those situations, so I can get away with the lighter 24-200.

If you find yourself in low-light situations and don't want to drag along another lens and body, make the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect lens for indoor high school sports

Sharp, fast, and has excellent range. Perfect for catching trackside/courtside action up close and for reaching across to bring in throwing events, jumpers, vaulters, etc. Two negatives: 1. It's a little heavier, but workable; 2. The zoom is a little stiff. Or maybe I just need to hit the gym.

Bottom line: sharp images, let's in a ton of light, and fast enough to switch between subjects quickly.
