Having ordered from the Amazon renewed section, I was surprised when a virgin Nikon D780 with zero shutter activations arrived. The only thing that wasn't brand new was the box - worn and no cellophane, but the box serial number did match the camera's. An attached disclaimer sticker stated "(1) this may be an imported product not originally intended for sale in the USA (2) seller is not an authorized dealer of the manufacturer." So I got a gray market but pristine D780. All the peripherals were new and in original cellophane wrappings. The only thing not included was the manual, which I understand Nikon stopped printing because it's online.
A word on the D780 within the Nikon lineup. Nikon is obviously migrating to mirrorless cameras. This shows in their extensive Z camera line. The writing is on the wall with the flagship Z9. Despite being the best commercial camera ever produced, the Z9 is still priced a thousand dollars lower than Nikon's top pro F mount D6.
IMHO the D780 is Nikon's farewell to the F mount, into which they have crammed as many Z camera advances as they could. In Live View mode, working from the camera's rear screen, it is effectively a native F mount Z6. Of course this Z6 flavor is lost through the optical viewfinder. But Nikon deserves credit for going farther than any other camera manufacturer to bring mirrorless camera convenience to a legacy lens mount that goes back to the 1960s. Thank you Nikon for giving me an option to keep all my old F lenses functioning up to mid 2020s standards.
For somebody starting out in photography, I would unhesitatingly recommend that they go mirrorless. But Nikon hasn't forgotten us geezers with a load of old lenses, giving us the D780 as a much appreciated last F mount hurrah.
When setting up my gray market D780, the default time zone was Japan. The only menu language options were Japanese and English - no Spanish option as in USA Nikons I have purchased. So the camera's original destination looks like Japan. After a week of camera setup and shooting over three hundred pics, everything seems perfect with the camera. Every Nikon autofocus lens I have, plus one Tokina, worked and focused as they should. The manual focus lenses had to have their focal length and maximum aperture programmed in, and also work correctly.
I live in Costa Rica and have my Amazon purchases sent to me by a Miami freight forwarder. Given my circumstances, a 28% discount for a brand new D780 is more than I had hoped for. I'm a lifelong Nikon shooter and have purchased their cameras new, used and refurbished in the USA, Costa Rica, and Panama. I take good care of them and have never needed a Nikon camera repair, so the lack of a USA warranty is no big deal for me.
Thanks Amazon for a super deal on a super camera.
