There's a lot to like about this new camera.
This is an ideal unit if you plan on using this on a tripod. A shim between the camera and the actual mount itself may be required on some stands. Because even being fully tightened down with the mounting screw, the unit may rotate a little bit.
It has two USB ports for powering the unit and charging the battery. Unlike some other cameras, the battery must be present for the unit to operate.
I have larger hands than many, and all of the buttons (physical and virtual) for controlling the unit are well-sized. The screen size is excellent. I’ve used smaller units before, and I like not worrying about my fingers being too big and missing the desired control.
I like the glare hood. It’s one piece and snaps into place securely after being rotated about a quarter turn. It doesn’t have a traditional lens cover cap, but I don't think it’s needed. It comes with a nice cloth bag, which I slide over the top of the glare shield and secure with a medium-sized binder clip. I think that will give me sufficient dust protection.
The handle assembly is excellent. It's sturdy and has video, photography, and zoom operating controls. The zoom control on the actual unit is nice and feels good.
The disc access for the memory card is a highlight. Unlike other units, you don't have to do funky gymnastics to get it in and out of the slot. It's been very easy to turn the power off, extract the card, extract the data, and then put it back in. It comes with a 64 GB card, so that's an excellent bonus—you don't have to buy one.
The only criticism I have is that the door on the side of the unit where you plug in the external microphone, HDMI cable, and secondary USB port on the side of the unit does not go back on well once removed. It doesn't secure properly. I plan to use the unit on a stand so that the door will stay open anyway. As such, it isn't a serious issue.
Although it’s more expensive than most others in the category, it offers excellent value for money. If you're considering buying a cheaper unit, consider spending a little more and checking into this one—it's excellent!
