First off, the 4k picture quality is excellent - but video is only half of what makes a vidcam, and if the sound is as flat-out terrible as this one's, that renders it completely useless.
I'm no stranger to vidrecording, editing, audiorecording, and full production and final mastering of digital videos. We tested this one out of the box with both the 20DcB and 0DcB settings, recording live music, recorded narration and recorded audio from various distances and the result was the same, in varying degrees:
1) terribly tinny sound with 0 bass and only limited midrange; upper range was fine. And even when the video was processed and played back through pro-studio equipment, it was just as bad.
2) When the volume got a little high, the sound warbled - nearly like a condenser mic's cut-off.
3) Battery life was about an hour, after a 3-hour charge - fine.
4) And yes, as others have reported, the audio and video are out of sync. Which - if you're recording archival videos of a symphony orchestra (in this case, MY symphony orchestra,) is a deal-breaker right THERE.
Would it perform better with a higher-quality mic? I don't know. But I'd rather return this one than buy a new mic to try, only to have the result remain the same. And to rub salt in the wounds, only about ten days after buying this cam, I now see that it's got a $25-off coupon to tick. And that was the final straw.
