5.0 out of 5 stars Sick little lens

Super rad lens for a good price. Put it over my camcorder lens and got some sweet orb shots, held it over my polaroid lens to get the same effect. Make sure you put it over a lens that’s already wide enough to give you that orb effect (14-25mm). If not it’s just a wide angle. I included some shots i got using this lens. I recommend this little thing.

So I was hoping this would give me a little more of a fish eye effect than it actually does. When you read other reviewers say that it's really a semi-fisheye, they are right. The glass seems nice and the build quality is acceptable. It's a decent product. If you consider the price, it's a fantastic product. Some people are under the assumption that this is a stand alone lens. It is not. It screws on to your existing lens, in case you were confused by that.

The instructions and box infer that it has a detachable macro lens. To my mind this meant that if you want to do macro you can attach it, and if you don't want macro you can un-screw it to get more fisheye. This is not the case. The lens will not give you a focused image without the macro section. You cannot use the lens without the macro on it as far as I can tell. Furthermore, the macro lens attachment actually corrects some of the fisheye distortion that the main section gives you. I took the macro section off and held (with my hand) the main section at a distance from my lens and shot through the lens to achieve a really cool fisheye effect. But it is silly to shoot this way. I don't know why they didn't include a tube to replace the macro section so that you can shoot with a more dramatic fisheye effect. It is really curious to me that they would put a macro lens section in there that reverses the fish eye effect and the lens doesn't work without this section. I would pay twice the price for a better designed lens.

I use Canon and Nikon DSLRs. If you use this lens with say, a 50mm prime, you will increase the field of view considerably, but have just a little fisheye effect. I can see this being very useful if you are doing interior shots of buildings and landscape shots in nature. It's also pretty cool shooting flowers and things close up. I put it on a 35mm prime and the fisheye effect was much more prominent, obviously, but still not as dramatic as I was hoping. I'm sure if you used a lens lower than 35mm it would really start to shine as a fisheye.

So that's the deal with my experience. I hope it helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars At that price, how can you afford NOT to buy it?

The image quality with this lens attachment isn't stunning, but what do you expect for such a low price? There's lots of blur and chromatic aberration around the periphery of the image--much more so than in a more expensive lens. Some of that can be corrected in an photo manipulation program (Photoshop, or GIMP for those of us who like free software). I get the best results with manual focus and the image stabilization turned off (I've tested it so far with a Canon 18-55mm EFS lens). It's a fun lens for the occasional creative shot--I'd never use a "real" fisheye lens enough to justify the cost. Good build quality, although the downside is that to attach it to the 58-mm threads on my lens, I need to screw the included adapter onto it. You can't store the lens with adapter on it, because the included cap won't fit on it, so it's slightly more cumbersome to take on and off than if they'd just made it 58 mm.

As a side note, you can unscrew the 0.35x macro lens from the back, add it to your camera's lens and get a serviceable, if not great, macro lens. Not terribly impressive, but it's an easy enough way to dip your toe into macro waters if you haven't before.

As a final note, I'm horrified by the reviews here of people disappointed because they thought this was a standalone lens they were going to attach to their camera, rather than a lens attachment that screws on to the filter threads of your lens. How do you guys function in the real world? Do you buy a car and then gripe that act all mystified and upset when you learn you have to also buy fuel to put in it? Seriously, you didn't notice any of the usual specs for a lens stating what sort of mounts you could use? Sheesh!

Very clear picture. You can unscrew the top of the lens and it is not as wide. Very pleased with quality.

I didn't want to spend the money for a fisheye lens but I did want to take some photos with the distortion and artistic approach that fisheye's give you. This is an okay alternative to spending a few hundred bucks for a lens that may not be used very often.

For the price you can't complain too much, but you do get what you pay for. It takes okay photos but nothing like a real fisheye lens. It's neat to fool around with and get a different point of view in some of your photos. Just don't expect superior quality and you won't be let down.

I was under the impression that the glass would pertrude out from the from of the lens casing (like a real fisheye) but thats not the case. There is a flat piece of glass on front of this lens with the fisheye behind it. You still get the fisheye effect, but it's not a true fisheye to me.

In summary, it's a nice piece to add to your camera bag if you just want to fool around a bit and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to do it. The ability to attach it to an existing lens gives you another variety of photos to take, for a low price. I'd reccomend it as long as you understand it's not going to be a true fisheye or match the quality of fisheye lenses.

I was a little leery about buying this lens as it was under 50 dollars, but it works great with our camera and takes ever better pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for when you have no other option for wide angle.

I have a point and shoot camera that accepts 52 mm filters and I wanted an ultrawide lens for it. No one is going to mistake it for a Zeiss lens. But my options were very limited, and I shoot infrared with this camera and those images are surreal anyway so the lens defects are much less obvious. But you have to know that if you're buying a $40 screw on lens that it's not going to be top quality.
