5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the enthusiast!
Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2013
Purchased this camera for my father as an upgrade to his older T3. It's a nice little camera, with canons newest Digic5 processor. It can take some very clean images. It is touchscreen and it's worth noting that the eyepiece has a proximity sensor so the touchscreen turns off when you bring the camera to your eye. So need to worry about accidentally changing settings with your nose! The menu is just as easy to navigate as Canon's other consumer/enthusiast grade cameras and it's not cluttered up with confusing buttons. It's a very straight forward DSLR that can take great pictures! The body has a bit more weight than my fathers old T3 which is nice, and helps balance the weight out better when using longer lenses. All in all, I can't think of anything negative to say about this product and would highly recommend it to a beginner/enthusiast photographer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Picture quality is a lot better than I expected

The camera is smaller and nicer than I expected. Picture quality is a lot better than I expected. but I am sure it is not as good as the "pro" models that cost 5 or 10 times as much as this camera did.

It has a touchscreen on the back of the camera that flips out and makes it easier to compose a shot when you are holding it above your head or holding it at waist level. I really like the touchscreen because it makes it easier to change settings and to focus on the thing that you really want to focus on. The autofocus usually works fine and will do that for you, but on RARE occasion, it will focus on the wrong thing, so you can use the touchscreen to override the autofocus.

The autofocus works fine, and is USUALLY pretty fast. Does this camera possess the world's fastest autofocus? NO, but it is not supposed to: it is a basic SLR camera that is meant for families or people starting out on digital photography.

If you have to have the best picture quality that money can buy, or need the fastest camera that money can buy, then do not buy this camera. Buy one that costs a lot more money, and do your research. If you want a cheap camera that offers better picture quality than your smartphone, this would be a good choice, or maybe you should wait and get the Canon Rebel T6i, which is supposed to be announced later on this month.

UPDATE: The Canon Rebel T6i and the Rebel T6s have recently been announced at the CP+ 2015 tradeshow. Both cameras look like they offer improvements over the Rebel T5i, particularly the Rebel T6s, which seems to be more of a "prosumer" than the T6i or the T5i.

2nd UPDATE: The Canon Rebel T7i and the 77D have been announced by Canon and they are to replace the Rebel T6i and the T6s accordingly. By the looks of it, they are a significant improvement over the Rebel T6i and the T6s, as well as older Rebel cameras like this camera. I am looking forward to reading reviews of the new cameras to see if they are worth spending the money in order to upgrade to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars No complaints!

Since I have gotten this camera, I can barely set it down. I am not an expert, and won't compare this to other past models (there are enough of those informative reviews). The reason I bought the newer version, it was only $50 more than the older T4i. Not much of a reason, but that is the truth. I am still learning some of the key features, but am having so much fun with this camera, it has become an extension of me. I won't leave home without it!

Having a budget I needed to adhere to, I bought the body separately. I wanted to buy a quality camera, and knew I could buy the better lenses as I am able to afford it. I already had 2 old lenses from a Canon Rebel Ti (non digital) that I read were compatible (35mm-80mm and 80mm-200). I bought an extension tube from Fotodiox (less than $40) that I can use both of these "old" lenses with to get up close Macro shots. The autofocus is disabled with the tube, but it is not difficult to find the range if you are willing to play with it in manual focus.

I later bought a 50mm 1.8 lens that I could not be happier with. (Under $150) It takes beautiful Bokeh shots that I put no effort into. The images are super sharp. The background gets that blur that makes your subject stand out. I noticed even some of the poorly framed shots look amazing with this lens. This little lens has been great for shooting people, animals, flowers, bugs, landscapes, things in action or at rest. A beginner's must have in the photog bag.

This camera works with cheaper, less fancy/expensive lenses and still does a great job. I can't wait to build up to some of the higher quality lenses and see where this takes me. This camera has given me nothing to complain about! Quality is great. No malfunctions. Everything works beautifully. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys taking photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera, great price!

I was watching the T3i for a long time waiting for the price to go down when this hit the market. I was upgrading from the XSi that I've been using for many years and was really interested int he better quality and ability to record video. The T4i had the new easy record mode, but the T3i had the better reviews.

When the T5i came out I couldn't understand why it was cheaper than the T3i. It had all the same features (a few reviewers did say the performance in stills was a tad bit better in the T3i and T4i) but this one offered the ability to changed focus automatically and to be able to alter "targets" for focal changes. Now I admit, I'm not a professional photographer, but for family pictures and product shots, this is far and beyond the best camera I've ever used. I'm sure the full frames are way better, but for my needs this far exceeds them.

Plus the fact it took my old 2 lenses is a another reason to stay int he Canon family.

As a Con, I will admit that when recording, it is slow to change focal points to someone in the background, plus if anything obstructs the focal object, the lens randomly chooses something to focus on. I really can't ding them for the last point, since the photographer show be the one responsible for keeping the primary object in frame, but it is good to know.
