5.0 out of 5 stars Smart suitcase, looks like it is built to last

Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Spinner 20, Caribbean Blue, One Size

My last carry on suitcase served me well for over 12 years, accompanying me on countless trips, usually over-stuffed, through winter weather, through slush and rain and dragged across the cobble-stone streets in Berlin. In the last couple years it began to show it's age, but it wasn't until the handle finally ripped off and the inner lining tore a small hole on my most recent trip that I admitted it was finally time to move on.

My initial inclination was to buy something cheap - I don't need fancy luggage, I got student loans to pay... So I was poking around and looking at options in the $30 - $40 market, and there were some that looked ok. But then I would dig into the reviews and read about them breaking on the first trip, or having stuck wheels or finicky handles... Not feeling satisfied I put off the purchase for a while. I went to a store and looked at some of these models in person, and I was startled by how flimsy they felt in person. They were not built to handle the abuse of transatlantic air-travel. Feeling ambivalent, I put off the decision yet again.

Fast forward to Tuesday of this week, no suitcase purchased, my flight is Friday morning. I pull my old trusty carry-on out of storage and seriously debate taking it on one last journey... just one more time?? The suitcase does not want. So I come back to Amazon and search again until I find this suitcase. It's not super cheap, but it's not expensive either, and it has a great color, and good reviews, and it sturdy in the photos... I'm still undecided, but, well, clock is ticking, I bite the bullet.

Suitcase arrived just in time for my flight :-) My roommate carried the box upstairs for me this afternoon and when I thanked her, commented on how light it was. As soon as I open it I am relieved, this is a strong and sturdy suitcase, and it looks smart. The handle is long, and slides out easily, doesn't rattle around like those other flimsier models did. Wheels are seemingly good quality. The body looks quite durable and scratch resistant, the zipper is good quality, oh and there's even a lock. It holds a lot of stuff for how small it is, and it is expandable which is helpful for people who sometimes overpack.

UPDATE: Suitcase held up perfectly over 4 four flights over the holidays, on two of which it actually had to be checked because the flight was very full. Not a single scratch or dent, no signs of wear, and it was easy to travel with - rolled smoothly and easily, sturdy handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great suitcase for family travel on plane and train!
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024
Took this medium sized suitcase to Italy and it was a game-changer/lifesaver for our family trip. It was my first time using a hard-shell and on the trains going from Naples to Venice and Venice to Rome it fit easily into the luggage area for larger suitcases and when the train was full and other people stacked their huge suitcases on top of this one it held up great. We ended up using the expansion feature which worked perfectly. The Caribbean blue color is gorgeous and I always use luggage straps too (see photos) so it is easy to spot on the luggage carousel. We wheeled it to our hotel down narrow streets in Venice and it was so smooth - no issues with the wheels at all. And in the train stations it moves super fast on the smooth floors. Highly recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable! Pretty & love it.

Okay, I’m retired now & do a bit of traveling with girlfriends. Since I travelled a lot during my software career I wanted to get rid of the set of luggage I had when I worked. Had always purchased Samsonite sets so thought I would start there. Decided hard back & glad I did. Selected the Caribbean Blue because one thing you learn when you fly a great deal is the more boring your luggage the greater the likelihood that it will get stolen. Nobody is going to steal this bright blue suitcase & run through the airport with it. It’s too easy to spot. And oh, you can pick your luggage out on the arrival carousel quickly. The blue color is not a loud, brash blue. It’s a fun, I’m on vacation, blue. Originally, I bought only the carryon just to test out the hard surface feature. It’s lightweight & is so easy to maneuver, especially if you have a couple pieces. The only thing I wish was different. They don’t have separate compartments to keep your items organized. There’s only one long zippered compartment on the fold of the suitcase. And there’s a sneaky compartment too. On the inside on the side that has the handle you will see a long zipper. I roll up my jeans & put them between the handles which gives you more room AND it helps to keep your clothes flat. Otherwise the handle bars will crease your clothes. Buy some additional toiletry bags or if you have some from other luggage sets, use them. My older Samsonite luggage had extra bags, etc & I just use them. So, yes I purchased the 24” as well. Heads-up….Amazon sells the luggage straps that you can use with this set. Say, 10 dollars for 2. Literally you can attach the handle of the smaller luggage to the extended handle of the larger bag, put your tote bag on top of the larger bags, wrapping the handles around the extended handle & use one hand to pull all your luggage so you can enjoy a cup of coffee in your other hand. Once you attach it a couple times you can do it pretty quickly, in the middle of the night, in the dark. It’s very smooth, especially in busy airports. It’s just ingenious. So, if you see someone in an airport with Caribbean Blue luggage strapped together like I’m the boss, be sure to stop me & say hello.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed them for frequent travel while the wheels lasted

Like the title says, I loved this luggage while the wheels lasted. I bought the set of 3 in the Caribbean blue. Beautiful luggage at a great price, super lightweight, sturdy case, and roomy. Despite its light weight, the body of the luggage held up very well against dings and protected the contents well. A friend purchased the same set before me and hers is still going strong after 4+ years, but she only uses them a couple times a year. Unfortunately, with my frequent travel, the wheels started to become difficult to roll especially on carpet in about 3 years.

I got excited when I saw that the updated version of this luggage, the Omni 2, has better wheels. Sadly, for some reason Samsonite decided to make the carry on of the Omni 2 so tiny. It can actually fit in my old Omni carryon! (I was able to fit up to a week’s worth of clothes in the Omni. I struggled to fit a weekend’s worth in the Omni 2).

In short: If you need the occasional suitcase, get this set! If you travel several times a year, get one with better wheels (perhaps the Omni 2, if you can tolerate the teeny carry-on).
