5.0 out of 5 stars Good CPU for adults
Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2024
I did an upgrade with 9950x cpu, B650 board and 64GB CL30 kit. I am aircooling this with noctua NH D15SE AM4. Cinebench 2024 MT did 2256. My data processing use case improved only +50% from 5800x3D initially. I then assigned affinities manually to avoid overlap of each process to both CCDs, I also disabled SMT. I reached 2.6x throughput compared to 5800x3d. Obviously this CPU is not for gaming, but it does work well for parallel workloads. My temps are between 60-90C without OC on air. I would recommend this to anyone who does not need 3d vcache part, because the price difference to other models is not that relevant and all these cheaper options (except 3d cache) are contained in this cpu. You could always disable as many cores as You want in a BIOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Switching to AMD hasn’t been easier
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024
After all of the controversy surrounding Intel’s 13th and 14th gen CPU issues, I took a glance at AMD’s offerings for my next build. I decided to wait until the launch of their 9000 series to decide which brand to go with, eventually settling on the 9950x. Though the jump from their 7000 series CPUs may not have been huge, the 9950x is a beast in performance. Not their best chip for gaming, but 3d rendering and adobe software has been really solid. And honestly, the gaming performance is pretty impressive too. Hoping there will be minor adjustments made to further squeeze out performance from these chips. CPU temps stay within the specified range and I haven’t had any windows hiccups. The 9950x is expensive though, so for a reduced cost, it should be on your radar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CPU!!

I have been builidng AMD PC's for over 30 years and this is one amazing CPU!! It does tend to run a bit warm but I do not mind that if it is fast. I have it paired with an ASUS X870E Hero and 96gb Corsair Dominator Titanium RAM at 7000MT/s. This is an amazing combination of components for a high end workstion and/or gaming PC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good cpu but

It is a good cpu. I just feel that the price is really not worth it for this cpu. It works great, it does have alot of horse power, the temps do get really high even with a 360mm aio. Definitely not something you should get if you game at all. Its simply a work horse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the purchase

I bought this cpu to replace my ryzen 9 7950x and was hesitant because on paper they both look about the same. They may look the same, but this thing runs much faster. My startup time has decreased, programs are snappier, and I tested both on cinebench and the 7950x was getting around a 1990 score and the 9950x is getting a score of 2380. Even though I was skeptical, this upgrade turned out to be very worthwhile

5.0 out of 5 stars The late news is right
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024
The early reviews from pundits and articles took the view that the 9000 series was no better than the 7000 series, but with a higher price tag.

The truth is that the updates to Windows 11 and the updated microcode opens up the 9950x, making it a fantastic choice for production. The X3D series are better for games, but I'm not a gamer. I waited on the Intel 15th gen release before I moved to upgrade my workstation. I chose the 9950x based on the findings about Intel's late product.

I'm entirely satisfied with the 9950x as the basis for a development system. I work on software for engineering and manufacturing. Compiling, 3D modeling and physics simulations are part of the work, and while some of that is reliant on GPU compute, I must have significant resources available from my workstations. At any one time I may have 4 or 5 guest operating systems running in virtual machines, while compiling, modeling and simulating throughout. I started this build with 96 Gbytes of RAM, but upgraded to 192 when I tried the combination (I built 6 workstations with 9950x chips and had the RAM to try).

I didn't want to wait on the 9950X3D, though I expect it may have some advantage when it is released.
