5.0 out of 5 stars Best Gaming Router

This is truly the best gaming router I have ever owned. It was very easy to unbox and setup. It had clear instructions on how to get it connected off of your modem and how to set it up (either Wired, Wireless or through a app.) The setup was quick and it had you setup all your Wireless networks along with a username and password to login to the router. The 8 antennas on it give great reach to all the devices I have across my house and even reaches out to my garage where we have a IP camera (which we had issues getting connected to previously). When fully setup you have a very neat and advanced UI for the router. You can see all traffic coming in and out from it as well as all devices connected or offline. You can also change the name of the device as well as the icon for the device as well so you can easily tell what each device is on the network. Also the speeds are truly top end, if it says 10GB it hits as high as my speed can go on my current ISP (1,000Mbps) . It was a very heavy price but it has many positives and a great way to manage your own home network.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product but...

I posted a review about this a while back, but I need to rewrite it in case some of you guys run into this issue.

I bought a used one a while back and started noticing a nagging issue: after several hours of little or no traffic (e.g., in the morning), this thing would lose internet connection and essentially "lock up". Rebooting it would bring it back. Believing I had gotten a bad router, I swapped it out. This time I paid a little more money and requested a news one. To my surprise, the new router had EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE! Clearly this is no coincidence. Either the firmware is buggy or something else is going on.

After several days of exchanging emails with Asus and getting nowhere, I decided to chat with their tech support. I explained the issue and suggested the maybe the new firmware might be buggy. He suggested using an older version and gave me the download link, BUT he also suggested I do the following first:

1) Turn the router off using the power switch in the back.
2) Press and hold the "WPS" button and turn the router on.
3) Continue holding down the "WPS" button until the power light turns off.
4) Turn the power switch off and back on again. The router will restart.

3 days on and not one crash yet. Also: this procedure will wipe your settings. Be sure to back them up to a file and import the when the router comes back. If the backed up files ends in "*.cfg.crdownload", rename it to just "*.cfg" or it will not import.

I suggest Amazon perform this procedure on the router I returned before reselling it. May it's the reason the first customer returned it in the first place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for what we needed for

Purchased for collge dorm. Since all the smart devices in the room were on public wifi couldn't connect to each other. Used this to create local network for all in room smart devices works great so far. Setup wasn't to bad but I'm an i.t guy and had to call Asus with some rudimentary questions. But once setup works great range and speed is more than adequate even while streaming and gaming. Great little add on to keep you a little safer on a public wifi and allow those extra smart device functions that we paid a premium for lol

5.0 out of 5 stars A great little travel router
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024
Great little device with a full feature set of a regular Asus router. Can be used as a router for an apartment or a small house, but will really shine as a travel device. Can also be configured as an AiMesh node, wireless bridge and supports VPN (client and server). Great at connecting to public WiFi or mobile phone hotspot (USB tethering) and providing VPN protected connectivity to all your devices while traveling. Can be configured to turn VPN on/off with a button. Looks like this will be a part of my laptop travel bag going forward.

Currently have this router in the public WiFi mode, but connected to my home WiFi with a different SSID running with a VPN client. So any device needing a quick VPN connection can connect to this SSID and have full VPN protection (without turning on a VPN client on the main home router). A good use case, when not traveling.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wifi Drops Devices
Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024
I don't normally write reviews but I wanted to share my thoughts on this one because I was so excited for it. I did return this to Amazon slightly after the 30 day return period because they made an exception but this router was such a disappointment.

I don't know if the hardware was faulty or if the software was just junk but this router could not keep devices connected. I have quite a few IoT devices as well as general of the mill devices like tablets, iPad, and phones. All PC devices are hardwired via ethernet either directly to the router or via network switches. Ethernet devices worked flawlessly (should be standard, not something we hope for in a high-end router anyway but you'd be surprised.)

However, Wi-Fi is another story. While the newest firmware allowed you to enable MLO, nothing worked properly. MLO or not. Devices, regardless of IoT or my Samsung S24 Ultra, were randomly dropped. My Alexa devices would constantly get kicked off and an error message that a wrong credentials were entered. My pool equipment which is a pain to power cycle through would not last 3 hours before the connection to the equipment would get dropped. I was honestly floored, my last few Asus routers have been a little rough but none like this. What's worse, little devices like my cat's litterbot 4 or water fountain wouldn't even connect to Wi-Fi. If I used my tablet in my bedroom, I could barely get 10Mbps compared to my previous router. This thing just isn't it.

I have a strong bias to Asus and normally love their products, but the last few years have been rough. Between spotty hardware, atrocious software, and lackluster motherboards on pc builds. I'm starting to shy away. I picked up the Netgear Orbi 970, router only, since I don't need the mesh and haven't been happier. Everything connects, no dropped devices, full speed almost anywhere in the house, and I get speeds equivalent to my fiber connection. Hope this helps some peeps looking at this router.
