5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool

This little device and the app that goes a long with it is pretty cool. It will scan your film negatives and turn them into digital photos! Who knew this could be done on our own and so simply. It takes a minute or so to set up and then you open the app and set your phone on the device. Once you’ve done that slide your negative in and make sure it’s lined up with your phone. Snap a pic and then the software will do the rest! Very cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steamlines batch negative scanning but the KLIM app is lacking
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2024
This stand for film scanning comes with a built-in backlight for digitizing analog negative films with a flick of a button. The backlight is bright and perfectly sized to illuminate a single film slide. I think this is a game-changer especially for large batch conversion jobs where the user were to rely on photo apps with an automated cropping feature. This would reduce the time in taking a single picture from minutes to mere seconds, a few at the most with proper configuration.

Here's what the scanner includes: two pairs of legs with varying heights, long and short. The longer one is installed by default and would work with wide-lenses of modern smartphones. The shorter one would work for older models or other cameras with a shorter focus length. It also includes a pair of batteries for the backlight, microfiber cloth for cleaning the lens or films, and some decals for the brand for some reason. I forgot to mention that it also comes with a metal plate that can be affixed to the back of the user's phone to take advantage of the stand's built-in magnet for greater stability when taking pictures.

On hardware, this product is as solid as it is simple in design. In contrast, KLIM's software solution is quite disappointing to say the least. The app opens as a simple camera app with no user interface other than a single button meant to trigger picture-taking. Further, the user cannot zoom in/out nor to even make the lens focus when it goes out of focus. I had to resort to closing the app entirely and launch it again and cross my fingers in the hopes that the camera would launch with the lens in focus.

To close, it's an excellent stand with a built-in backlight specialized for digitizing negative film slides. I'd avoid KLIM's proprietary smartphone app and just look for other fully developed apps in either app stores that are also available for absolutely for free. 4 out of 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great

It is amazing to bring old negatives to life.
I found a bunch of negatives in my parents home. Pictures of myself and other family members that I had never seen.
That’s really cool.
The magic is in the app and how the software manipulates the negative.
But the software keeps crashing. I notice the crashes occur when making edits to the captured photos.
I also really wish there was a way to batch capture negatives. As is, you have to scan with your phone using the app and then make the changes you want and then save the picture. You have to do that for every picture one by one. It would be great to do it in bulk.
It is also sometimes difficult to get the negative in focus. At first I was thinking all of the photos were taken out of focus. No. You have to move the phone away and try again until it finds focus.
I also don’t like that it is powered by batteries. I can see that being a frustration as I have hundreds of negatives to scan. Direct power would be much better.
There are some downsides but it is still really cool to see moments from the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's OK but not high definition

This is a handy little scanner for negatives and positive slides too. They have an app that you can download but it's not needed if you have the right photo editor. My photo editor will change a negative to positive and vice versa so I can scan a negative and then convert it in the photo editor. If you have slides, you can scan them in and it captures the picture which you can enhance the color in a photo editor again. The pictures "scans" from your phone and it creates a very small picture from the negative. Unfortunately, when I enlarged the photo, I lost resolution. That makes sense, of course. I had mistakenly thought that this would give me a larger and clearer picture but I could not figure out how to do it. Basically you can use a scanner to capture the negatives and do the same thing. I'll keep fiddling with this for a bit to see if I was doing something wrong, and return to t his review to update if I find out a way to get higher definition pictures from this scanner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy scanner
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024
I had a box of old sides that I wanted to convert to digital pictures and this device from KLIM does the job. The unit is easy to set up and the instructions are very clear. The unit feels solid and well-built. It only took a few minutes to get the device ready for my first slide.

I have not used the included app yet so can't comment on that. Using my camera app did a good job of capturing the slide. These slides are very old, from around 1980, and I think they were taken with a disposable camera. The quality of the digital image was comparable to the original.

Overall, this is an inexpensive way to preserve old slides or negatives you have lying around.

The KLIM K2 Mobile Film Scanner was easy to set up and very easy to use. The photo quality was better than I thought it would be. I would recommend this to anyone that has a drawer full of negatives they would like to look at.
