    5.0 out of 5 stars Nice vSphere Server
    Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2021
    Picked this up a year ago, and have been using it as a server.

    Recently replaced the OS with ESXi and vSphere for my home lab, and it's great for that task.

    Upgraded to 4-1.2 tb 10k SAS drives, and upgraded the RAM with an extra 64gb totalling 96GB. The total on the system is 8-16GB RAM sticks, so 128GB is the max.

    This system has tons of USB 3.0 ports, but would like to add USB-C ports, so I am adding a card for that... which this case has plenty of space and slots for.

    It has been sitting in a corner, on, since I set it up. It's quiet and just works. I like the HP Z series. But, just make sure you are getting the best XEON processor you can get... or need for your purposes, and pick the one that has the best specs. This one has 8 hyperthreaded cores, looking like 16 CPUs to vSphere. That is an excellent amount of CPUs for virtualization.

    For the money, a great deal.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, and excellent customer service!

    This is a wonderful computer, and it arrived on time, in perfect condition, and just as advertised. The only thing is that the optical drive wouldn’t open, but I contacted the seller and they shipped me a new one at no charge. It works great! They also promptly helped me with a few other hardware questions I had. I wish I could give more than five stars! Great experience!

    3.0 out of 5 stars A problem with memory ...
    Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2021
    The description reads as though it should have 600Gb of hard drive space via 2 300Gb hard drives. I only have 1 drive and 300Gb memory.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Would be good but...
    Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2020
    I have experience with these Z440 workstations (not server) for many years. The refurb job is really good on these. However, the item description of LSI 9217 4i4e RAID is not what I got. I got a HP firmware flashed LSI 9205 which has the RAID function PERMANENTLY DISABLED in the BIOS. It's basically useless without flashing the card's firmware/BIOS with LSI vendor software which is INCREDIBLY painful and I don't have time for. It's awful that I have to write this review because otherwise this unit is in superior shape and besides the false advert on the RAID controller and utter uselessness on the one I got is unforgivable. Buyer beware...

    4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Amazon Z440 Workstation
    Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2020
    I ordered the Z440 workstation from Amazon on 6/27/2020.Received 7/2/2020 - 5 days from order to delivery - very good - *****'sThis is the advertised configuration:HP Z440 Tower Server - Intel Xeon E5-2630 V3 2.4GHz 8 Core - 32GB DDR4 RAM - LSI 9217 4i4e SAS SATA Raid Card - 600GB (2X 300GB SAS New HDD) - NVS 310First of all the box is a workstation and not a server as the model is a HP Z440 workstation.The contents of the shipment were the following:
    * the workstation
    * a power cable
    * a mouse and a keyboard

    Not a shred of documentation. But, you can download the documents from HP's support website.The mouse and keyboard are crap. Discard them and get something better. **'s
    The interface to a display is "DisplayPort". This requires an inexpensive adapter cable from Amazon - $8 to make the transition to VGA or HDMI. ***'sSo far so good.
    The workstation is clean as a whistle, almost brand new looking. Its hard to believe that a machine this old cleaned-up so well. *****'s for this. Inside of the box is just as clean. All wiring is clamped down. By far the BEST internal configuration I have seen in the 20 years I have been building PCs.
    There are no extra power connectors. There is one power connector that is used for two of the two drives. There is a slim line DVD Writer drive that wasn't mentioned which worked fine. (****,s)
    Now comes the big issue. The order stated that the following storage configuration will be shipped: 600GB (2X 300GB SAS New HDD). Along with the LSI 9217 4i4e SAS SATA Raid Card it would make a nifty RAID 1 configuration. But to my dismay the dual "NEW" 300GB SAS drives were replaced by a single 600GB old hard drive. It is hard to establish a Raid 1 configuration with one HDD. For this they get **'s. I think I'm going to end up purchasing two 500GB SSD's and connect as a Raid 1 configuration. HP's documentation tells you how to do that.The ability to add more than two drives is limited. The Raid card provides cabling and power for 4 SATA drives. But there are only two slots for available in the existing drive cage. Plus the drive carrier mounting plate that plugs into the drive cage is very special. There seems to be room for another drive cage but I have no idea where one would find such a cage. For this they get ***'s.
    -Powering On The system powered up with Win 10 Pro installed with no issues except that Windows had not been activated. I had to use the same product key from the old Win 10 pro box that was being replaced with no issues. ***'s
    -I am running two displays 1.) a VGA Terminal display and 2.) a HDMI TV. Works great. ****'s
    -It not the fastest system, its on par with an Intel i5 with Hdds. When I finish the transition from HDD to SSD I think the performance will be much better.

    My overall opinion is for the price/value it is a best buy (****'s.) For a tinkerer it does have some challenges because of the lack of additional drive configurations.
