5.0 out of 5 stars Works with Home Assistant

I use the Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus Gateway to communicate with all my Zigbee devices via Home Assistant running on kubernetes. I am currently passing the USB device into the HA pod with Akri. It was simple to setup in HA and so far I am impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far a solid choice

I immediately used this product with Zigbee2MQTT so all of my opinions are for this setup. I followed the instruction for this adapter on the Zigbee2MQTT website (and may have found a YouTube to give me some more confidence) before proceeding to flash the firmware. The written instructions were a little...rough (I love downloading random .docx files, but YOLO and Linux). If followed, they work and getting the stick to work with Zigbee2MQTT (Home Assistant add-on) was also fairly painless. Make sure you understand the network options in Zigbee2MQTT before setting everything up. It's a good idea to personalize your network key and much easier to do before you start including a bunch of devices.

I have about 8 smart plugs and a couple of Philips Hue lamps as a mesh and 12 end devices on my network. So far I mostly use my Zigbee network for motion/temperature/lux sensors (since the Hue ones are amazing), door locks, and a couple of cheapo thermostats that work pretty well. The plugs are mostly for the mesh (I think I have a HomePod plugged into one for some reason) and some lamps in an inflexible room.

This stick with Zigbee2MQTT has been a solid combination. Not every device has worked perfectly every time, but every device I've bought has worked at least as well as it states in the official Zigbee2MQTT device list. Read the device information carefully before you purchase anything, there may be caveats. My toddler can inundate the network with RGB changes through my phone and I rarely see any lag. I plan to keep adding Philips Hue devices to this network since they have been so solid. I prefer not having to rely on their bridge (3rd party controlled dependency) and this setup got me into the Hue devices fairly painlessly using open source software that I can actually decipher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Assistant Zigbee Dongle

If you're looking to get started with Home Assistant with Zigbee, this is an excellent, well supported choice for Zigbee over MQTT. After some initial time investment setting up, this has been working flawlessly for me for the past couple months with no drops across my entire home. If you're having issues, there are good troubleshooting guides out there, including instructions on how to use a different wireless channel to avoid interference. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought two of these for or floor-located tower computers; work great!

The tiny wifi chip in our two Alienware computers started going on the fritz. So I removed them, and we both are now using this external unit. They work great, and the price is fair. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Got from Amazon Warehouse and it was broken - required my troubleshooting to fix - now work great!

I needed a Zigbee hub and this one is highly recommended for Home Assistant. You just plug it in and it is auto detected and installed.. or at least that’s what is supposed to happen.

I ordered this in ‘ok’ condition from Amazon Warehouse to save about $7. The device came in a plain box and looked brand new. Plugged it in.. was recognized by Home Assistant, but when I tried to install it that kept failing. The logs showed some config settings weren’t being applied properly.

Did some research online and followed the steps to flash the latest version of firmware onto this device. It was a major pain to do this, but I finally got the new firmware installed. Plugged this into my Home Assistant PC and it was detected, then the installation worked no problems. Yay! Was able to pair some Zigbee devices with no issues either. Has been working well for a couple of weeks.

So why didn’t it work right away? I think someone may have flashed it as a Zigbee router instead of a repeater. Or maybe someone else tried to flash it, and it only partially worked, leaving the device in a broken state. I figure they tried to get this working, failed, and then gave up and returned it to Amazon. And at Amazon they look at it and see it looks OK so just resell it as working. I doubt Amazon was able to test this before reselling it. If so they would have known it was broken…

I’m glad I was able to fix it, but was it worth the $7 in savings? No way! It took me about 3 hours of hacking/troubleshooting to get this working. I was very pleased to get it fixed, but next time if it doesn’t work right away, I will return it and buy a brand-new one, which I’m confident would work right out of the box. The only reason I didn’t return this was because I really wanted to get this set up during the weekend and it would have been another 2 day wait to have Amazon ship me a new one.

    Lesson learned!

Works great, and we use this in conjunction with home assistant for monitoring a bunch of temperature and humidity sensors around the house, plus integration with our hue lights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my Intel NUC Home Assistant
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2024
I'm running Home Assistant off an Intel NUC and needed a USB Zigbee dongle. This dongle was extremely easy to setup and use. I plugged it into the NUC and was able to get it up and running very quickly.

I was able to pair some Aqara door sensors to my Home Assistant via Zigbee with this controller very easily. The range is also great, my NUC sits almost 2 floors away from where my door sensors are located. Aside from one door sensor which is further away, signal strength is great.

If I need another Zigbee dongle in the future, I'm definitely choosing this SONOFF controller again. It's also quite highly recommended on other forums and websites as well.
