I liked the general looks and description of this when I read the listing. Getting the actual product and exploring its hidden storage areas and pockets really got me psyched about how and what I could use this for, and made a very favorable impression of its build, durability, and functional value for the money. I bought it because of its back pack characteristics for storing items when going off to the woods or a canoe trip. It should not be confused with a real backpack--it is a mini-pack much like the specialty packs sold to duck or deer hunters, except this one has so many multiple pockets, zippers, and luggage type layout when you open the full length and one side zipper. This definiately could serve well as a carry-on for an air trip, and has enough space and compartments to last several days or more. The built in laptop sleeve is something I would use to put folded pants and maybe a shirt or two. There is some padding on the rear of the back pack but not enough to make it comfortable with some hard items. My intent on getting this was two-fold. One, making up a forced over-nighter or rain soaked day to keep in my truck and give me a dry set of clothes, a first aid kit, flashlights, etc.
The other use is to use this as a specialty bag for specific functions--e.g. a hunting gear bag, set up to separately hold bird hunting clothes camo, as well as blaze orange hunting vests, a couple of LED lights, shell boxes, GPS, first aid kit, choke tubes, hunting vests, fire starter, Bivy bag, wool socks, camo and blaze orange hats, etc. One bag for combined use for both types of bird hunting. I had visualized the description of green color as forest green--it is not--it is a pastel. The other major functional use to me would be to serve as a vishing and canoe trip pack, holding rain gear, fishing reels, lure boxes, GPS and compass, first aid kit, bivy bag, fly boxes, a hatchet, LED camp lights, gas lantern mantles, etc. The waterproof bag on the one side would be great if you take a dunking or a thunderstorm soaking.
This does not carry well as a backpack--the shoulder harnesses diverge like an inverted V, and the bag does not fit tightly or comfortably for a real hiking trip. The top strap is great--big enough to go around the top of a luggage carrier, and easy to both lift up, and hang up on a tree branch or large nail.
A bag like this but without the numerous compartments, would have cost over $20 twenty-five years ago. I'm not sure about durability, other than to say the YKK zippers function well and are waterproof, the back-straps look a little flimsy, and it's not clear how well the seam stitching will hold up.
For the price, this i a great deal, and is functionally multi-purpose. I only wish it had come in an earth or woods tone (brownish, tan, or dark green), and also wish that they'd included a belt strap with buckle and adjustment buckle. This gets my enthusiastic five star rating.
