5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best tablets for the price

I already own multiple iPads and higher end Android tablets. Why did I end up buying the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus and give it a 5 star rating?

This tablet simply exceeded my expectations.

I was in the market for a smaller lighter tablet to read books and manga. As good as my other tablets are, they are not easy to hold for multiple hours of reading. Holding a metal and glass tablet with a 10.6 inch screen gets tiring over a few hours.

The screen on this Amazon tablet is more than adequate for reading books from the Kindle app. This is near perfect for manga since the screen size is similar to paper manga. Images and text appear nice and clear.

Installing the Google Play store was easy. I need apps like Google Home, Keep, Drive, and GBoard. YouTube works just fine.

My use case is rather easy to handle. I let my kids test this tablet. If it can keep up with my kids, then it can handle what I need a tablet for.

When I handed this off to my kids, they just went overboard on games. They couldn't find all of the games they play in the Amazon shop store, so I'll be referencing some games from the Google Play store.

Roblox is a popular app for my kids. The overall performance was good. It really depends on which game they are playing from Roblox. Piggy ran well. Broken Bones was very jittery but playable. Yeet-a-friend plays well if you disable some of the extra options for the game itself. Cookie Swirl C World is playable, but was not the smoothest. Spray Paint played well. Spider also played well. Random OBEEs splayed well.

Here is the pattern I noticed with Roblox. If the game supports a large lobby, then there is a greater chance that the game runs a bit slower. I noticed that the large lobby games are running a bit slow, but my kids didn't care. They were still happily playing and winning without issues.

Granny Chapter 1 and 2 play well.

Gacha Life and Gacha Club ran well.

Among Us ran well.

They were playing more games, but I couldn't keep up with their long list.

Overall, this tablet can run games well enough. It won't be as smooth as a higher end tablet, but I didn't notice any random crashes. My kids would have definitely complained about it. If you are considering this tablet for your kids to play games, you need to consider which games they are playing.

Surprisingly TikTok worked well. When swiping through videos, it may take a second to load before it plays. I don't notice that issue on my other tablets. After the initial pause, the videos play well.

Since reading and productivity were my main concern, it's a 5 star tablet for the price. Games are just the icing on the cake. Since I don't play them often it would not have been a concern for me. Now I have another device to hand off to my kids in those just in case situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the Plus Version

On paper, the differences between the HD and HD Plus seemed insignificant if you don’t care about the wireless charging, so I originally bought the standard HD. I returned it within a couple of weeks because it was sometimes maddeningly slow. I wasn’t gonna buy this one, though, because it doesn’t even have a faster processor, just a little bit more RAM. But I also didn’t want to spend the money for an iPad mini when I mostly want to use it as an e-reader. So I was gonna settle for a decent android tablet for a little more money than a fire. Fortunately there was a shipping issue with that tablet that coincided with another great sale on the Fire tablets, so I gave the Plus a shot.
This is just my experience with two fire tablets, and maybe the first tablet had some sort of defect, but the difference between the HD and the HD Plus has been enormous. No the HD Plus is not as zippy and responsive as an iPad, but it’s been way better than the first HD Fire. It’s very usable and perfectly responsive for the few apps that I use, and again it’s a great e-reader. Screen is bright and sharp enough for reading, video, and games. My first HD 8 even struggled as an e-reader sometimes, taking a long time to load the Kindle app, or page turns not being as responsive as they should be.
And as a bonus, I got the wireless charging stand. It’s a surprisingly pleasant bonus to just plop it there when I’m done using it and to never have to plug a cord in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely runs smoother than the regular version!

It’s still a budget tablet, but a very useful one. Especially for the money. I would say even if you’re just using your Fire tablet for browsing the net, and/or reading books, there’s a smoother run and less glitching. Compared to the regular HD 8, it’s noticeable in things like when I’m exercising and want to use the text to speech function, it doesn’t glitch nearly as much. I was having to stop doing what I’m doing and restart the text to speech function a lot more on the regular version. Does the plus version still glitch now and then? Yes, but not so much that it’s annoying me almost every time I use it. And I’m not talking about an older Fire tablet, but the newest version of the regular HD 8 I returned for the plus version. It’s worth the $20 extra for that alone! Results may vary. These are mine and I hope it helps if you’re having similar issues and wondering if the upgrade to the plus will help.

I also connected a Bluetooth keyboard which makes it a LOT more productive. And my AirPods connect easily as well. I have no issues taking this to a library or cafe to write, get some work done, and can listen to music on the Amazon music app while I’m at it. Also, the split screen function on the regular version was not able to consistently split the screen in equal halves without glitching and minimizing one half if the screen. The plus keeps the split consistently. So if you’re on a budget, or just looking for a small inexpensive table you can toss in bag and not worry a whole lot about what happens to it, this is pretty easily replaced, but durable enough to stand getting bounced around. I’ve had the Fire 7 and an HD10. This is the right size for holding in your hands while reading and for portability. Best Fire tablet I’ve owned so far.
