5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for games!!!

When I saw GMK had a new design coming with better cooling and oculink i was looking forward to getting it. After getting it i wasnt disappointed. The 680m did quiet well in the games i play. Minecraft ATM10 i saw a constant 130fps. With shaders turned on it dropped to about 30 but it was still very playable. Horizon zero dawn the benchmark set to original quality it got 37 fps. Far cry 5 it got 41 FPS. So over all i am very happy with how this little guy is doing. Benchmark wise geekbench 4-single 6823, multi 37902, open cl 94624, gb5- single 1631, multi 9623, opencl 34079, GB6- single 2034, multi 10181. GB AI ONNX - Single percision 2860, Half 1413, quantized 3077. DirectML - Single 6079, Half 8527, quantized 4240

I bought a cheap oculink dock now i wish i bought a better one just to have a cleaner setup. I put in a rx580 to do some testing and it worked like a charm. I didnt have to do anything just turn on the computer with everything plugged in and powered. I also tested an ssd and 10gb networking and works like a charm. With the 10gb network i was seeing about 7ish Gigabits per second in transfers. Yea its not full speed for the card but that is pretty much full speed for a 4x4 pcie. so cant fault the computer for that.

I do like the design of the computer i wish the top fan had a filter of some kind but it is easy to open and clean if needed. Overall the fans are very quiet and the the system runs nicely. This computer is pretty good all around little computer for someone wanting small, quiet and capable with the ability to expand it over oculink. also if you have a powerful enough usb c dock you can do one cable operation with this. sadly my dock doesnt put out enough power for one cable operation so i run 2 cables.

TL;DR - Good performance, quiet fans, can play some games. usb 4 with power in support. Video shows the computer under full load and how quiet the fans are. I would recommend this computer to friends needing something for video editing and light gaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Inexpensive Mini Box

My sister needed a new computer and preferred not to spend a lot of money. I've had good luck with GMKtec units (I have two of them in daily use) but she wanted more power than the N100 box I initially suggested. The GMKtrec M6 at the coupon checked price seemed to fit her needs which are basic office work, browsing and some video replay.

Setting up her new micro box was pretty fast and easy though updating the Win11 OS took about a half hour mostly, I suspect, because of slow Microsoft servers or Windows internal that always seem to take more time than necessary. Attached is a picture of the screen during this process. Removing MS Office took a while but installing LibreOffice took almost no time at all.

Then, since neither of us do much gaming, I decided to try some encoding using Handbrake. I took a MKV version of Big (about 35 GB - BluRay size) and rendered it as an H265 MP4 at 720x368. It took the M6 00:27:06 to finish, almost twice as fast as it did when I did it on a N100 box last year but 50% longer than it did on my K6 (00:18:40).

This speaks well of the value of this fine little device. At its coupon price, it’s about 50% more expensive than a capable N100 box and about 50% less expensive than the K6.

Since I am not a Windows fan, no review I write would be complete without a Linux test. My standby is Linux Mint Edge which runs Linux kernel 6.50. I downloaded a fresh copy from the LM web site, installed a bootable version on a USB-C 3.2 Samsung flash drive, and rebooted the M6. Within 45 seconds I had a Live version of Linux Mint Edge 21.3 running without a hitch. All functions that could be trouble spots (WiFi, audio, graphics hardware acceleration, etc.) worked fine.

My only negative comment on this unit is that it seemed to get noisy at what I consider low processor loads. At 25% usage, the fans come on pretty strong. The noise reader app on my phone says it was about 51 dB. On my K6 I don’t hear the fan unit it approaches 50% usage. Overall it’s not that big a deal. I never heard it during YouTube videos or movie playback, nor was there any noise while writing this review. I doubt she’ll ever hear it except during startup.

Overall, The GMKtec M6 is a fine device for the price. I know my sister will be pleased.
