5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this Portable Sonos Speaker

I’ve owned several Sonos speakers in my home and soundbar, but did not have a quality portable speaker. I was so excited to see Sonos came out with this Roam portable speaker which is waterproof, lightweight, and offers 10 hours of sound. It was easy to connect to my Sonos app and offers voice control and Amazon Alexa. Most importantly, the sound quality is superb! Take it to your pool, beach or travel. Great value as well!

    Hope this was helpful!

This little speaker has a big sound with strong bass and treble. It’s light weight, water resistant, and will play for up to 10 hours on a full charge.
Perfect for a back porch, patio, golf, or camping.

Perfect companion to our Sonos system. Amazing sound and bass quality from such a small speaker. The ability to connect to our Sonos system for the patio or Bluetooth for road trips and camping is awesome. One complaint is that I was charging it in the house while we were using our Sonos beam on the TV and it kept Turing on and causing a weird echo. I had to disconnect it from the charger in order for it to stay off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Inconvenience

    Nice speaker BUT
It goes into sleep mode after 30 minutes of non use. This means EVERY TIME you take a shower, you have to go into the shower to turn in on, come out of the shower to manage the music and then go back into the shower.
There is no way (according to customer support) to change this.
You might wish to consider a shower speaker that is more user friendly

4.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming performance

So, the positives right up front. Very small and portable. Simplistic but stylish. Easy to use and setup. Love the dedicated Bluetooth. Comes well packaged from Sonos. Very small and for its size, puts out good volume.

Now the potential cons. I have a Sonos Arc and the Sonos Move (1st Gen). Got them both for a great sale price and the sound quality never ceases to impress me. Especially the Move, which even at very high volumes plays great music from rock, country and rap. I bought the roam to be more portable than my Move, which I use on the deck, poolside or at small gatherings. The Roam was more for hiking, beach trips and casual listening washing the car, etc. I have to say I am not impressed. It sounds decent at its highest volume although you can tell you’ve reached its limit. I never feel like any of my other Sonos products have hit a limit even at 100% volume. It also sounds almost flat and very mono sounding vs steep or simulated stereo. Worse, it’s okay with rock or country or anything that has very little bass, but don’t try and play any kind of rap or hip hip. The bass is almost non-existent and really makes it feel like you’re pushing the speakers beyond their capabilities.

Granted, most small portable like this would have similar issues, but when I listen to my sons JBL Flip 5, which costs less than half the price, I feel like the bass is much richer and the sound is louder, but of relatively similar quality as the Sonos, which is very disappointing. Maybe I’m missing the mark on its intended use, but I don’t think so. For small sound and high portability, it’s okay, but feels overpriced when compared to a couple others for what it offers.

Would have considered a slightly larger roam in its 2nd generation for larger speakers or drivers or a dedicated bass port. I’ll have to sample it for a while and along others. I’m on the fence keeping it vs returning it. I’ll update my decision later.

UPDATE: okay, after using it down at the beach, I would have to say my opinion has changed some. While I still would like a bit more volume, it’s pretty good for small spaces and close to me or around the pool or campfire. Sound has grown on me for most music and I recognize what it is for its ultra portability. Battery life is good and it’s been easy to pair. Loud enough to enjoy, but not so loud as to annoy others around me at the beach. I bought it at full price for $179. If you wait for Prime Day or other major sales days, it drops to $143, which is a much more reasonable price where it’s worth it.

I love Sonos speakers and this addition is not lacking. Sonos quality is always great and this little guy has been a perfect fit for my outdoor patio. When I say little I mean that, its alot smaller and lighter than I expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many limitations on what they let you listen to
Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024
If you're a musician who wants to hear your own recordings during the mixing process, that's too bad. These speakers don't allow you to play "local files". They also don't work with spotify DJ. Not only does the dj voice not come through, it won't shuffle between genres. You would think that high end speakers would work seamlessly with the number one music streaming service, but that's not the case. Making every speaker the same volume isn't as simple as it should be, you have to start each session by leveling them out individually. Then, when using the volume bar on the side of your phone, you have to press it around 7-10 times before there is any noticeable difference. They do sound good, but the limitations are very frustrating.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great little speaker!

This little speaker is great! It sounds surprisingly good for its size, and its ability to use wifi or bluetooth is surprisingly useful. I love wifi speakers because of the range and ease of connecting devices, but when you need to take it somewhere else, the bluetooth is necessary. I mostly use my Roam in the house, but I also took it on vacation a few times to the beach and it was perfect. I mostly bought this speaker to test the waters with the Sonos ecosystem, and I'm excited to say that I'll be getting more in the coming years (my wallet is significantly less excited).
