Functional with decent audio quality. I phenomenal pair of backup earbuds that weren't too expensive. If you like softer earpieces, you may want to replace the squishy part since the plastic is not quite as soft as most silicones, but for me it's still comfortable.
If you are experiencing pain, you are probably inserting them into your ear incorrectly. The orientation has significant impact on the audio quality and comfort, so when you have them in the right place, they're really quite good. It just takes a little bit of practice.
