As an Apple user, I wanted great over the ear headphones with noise cancellation, but there was Absolutely No Way I was going to drop the fat stacks on the Apple ones. I started looking around and considering my options, originally deciding on some SRhythm off-brand ones here on Amazon. When I came back with the money to buy, the SRhythms were sold out so it was back to browsing. At this point, I decided it would be a better idea to go with a trusted brand that didn’t have the possibility of disappearing from Amazon within the next few years.

The ideal headphone, for me, was the Sony XM5s - after reading reviews it sounded absolutely godly. But it also costs godly amounts of dollars, which was the original problem I was trying to avoid.

Enter JBL, I realized the speaker brand that went from “a few of your buddies ride or die by this brand” to a sound-junkie staple was IDEAL. I shopped around, looked at similar Skullcandy models, other brands similar in price but also not offering anything better than passive noise cancellation.

The comparable Skullcandy model (price wise, at least) has worse battery life, primarily because it uses (imo) a ridiculous number of microphones for Active Noise Cancellation. At the time of my purchase, the Skullcandy model also costed slightly more which made even less sense.

I find the noise cancellation on these to be easily comparable to the AirPod Pros I have used before. Especially with music playing, I cannot hear a single thing outside of my little bubble. I’ve used these at work for two days straight without ever having to plug them in. They connect to my phone with ease and the buttons on the side are very useful. The audio quality is crystal clear, and I often use these in the car instead of my stereo. These things perform beautifully.

The JBL app is also a stroke of genius, allowing me all the customizability that Apple tries to prevent me from having with any non-Apple products. The different equalizer modes are absolutely killer too.

I only have two small gripes. For some reason, the lowest noise cancellation setting jacks up the outside microphone’s volume but completely mutes my music without pausing it. So I can hear if someone is talking to me, but there’s not even a hint of the song I was listening to. This is a little disappointing compared to the AirPods transparency mode.

The second one is that the ear cans on this thing are slightly too small for my ears, and I’m pretty sure I have relatively typical ear-size (elementary school kids would have made sure I knew if I had some Dumbo-sized ears yanno!). Wearing the headphones for hours at a time makes the cartilage on the side and top of my ear sore, and if they had like a millimeter or two more diameter that could be fixed.

All in all, I consider these to be five star worthy because it’s an excellent value for the price. I absolutely love these things, and I hope they will last me a good while. I will be back to update my review on their durability after having owned them for longer.

I bought these headphones on sale for $99 and was hoping that they sounded as good as what they cost. And they absolutely do. I am impressed with the clarity, neutrality, and elegant bass it has. I was expecting something more like Beats headphones with ridiculous amount of bass, very sharp highs, and just overall a nasty eq curve. But this JBL does everything you want it to with true fidelity and naturalness. The only slight negative would be that the sound stage a little small, not much breathing room for a wide open soundscape.

A couple of things to note. I use Tidal music streaming service with lossless/HiRes audio. To get the full quality you have to use the aux cable that it comes with. The sound is noticeably more accurate and faithful, but the bass gets a little lessened since your not using the built in amp in the headphones. With that said, it actually sounds very neutral and flat, which is astonishing because it’s really hard to achieve that in a hundred dollar headphone (usually would have to spend more).

The other thing is, when using Bluetooth the quality is obviously not HiRes or lossless, but you get a big bump in bass and treble, and the same clear and natural mids. So all in all you get a really nice and smooth sound out of the box. I choose not to mess with the eq on the app because it sounds so perfectly tailored and high quality as is.

Furthermore, when using the aux cable you can still turn on the headphones to use the ANC feature if you want, which is pretty neat. I did however notice that it affects the sound quality a bit. It has more bass and sharper highs, with a dip in the midrange. This results in a slightly thinner sound. So I would just use either Bluetooth or wired without turning on headphones. Using Bluetooth with ANC on or off doesn’t affect the sound quality. The Noise canceling itself removes about ninety percent of the noise I would estimate, which is plenty enough for me. No complaints there.

The build quality is excellent, and it is very comfortable on my ears/head although it gets hot after a while. I got the blue color which looks subtle and sophisticated. The headphones are surprisingly petite in size which I wasn’t expecting, which is good for me because I hate big bulky ones. I’m glad I spent the money on them because they really do deliver in a refined way, and certainly fits the bill.

Was looking for bluetooth headphones for watching TV, working out, and with some anc for flights and I think these fit everything I needed for a really good price.

    Pros
    - high quality sound and aac bluetooth codec
    - clear sound after setting the eq prest in the screenshot
    - no idle static
    - dual connection to 2 bluetooth devices
    - very low latency and no issues with audio video lag
    - connects directly to my nvidia shield with no issues
    - comfortable
    great battery

    cons
    - dont like the leather earpads so replaced them with another type of fabric ones
    - anc isn't amazing but also when you have audio playing it really doesnt matter that much
    - for some reason the anc button only switches between anc mode and ambient aware, no idea why it wouldnt just be on/off

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent

In this review, I'll be comparing these headphones to the JBL 510BT. When I first started using the headphones, the sound was AWFUL compared to the 510BT. They were really smart with implementing the equalizer in the app. It took me awhile to get the equalizer right, but now the sound is pretty decent. I'm a mom of two, so I make use of the ambient aware mode frequently. It works pretty well as long as you have the volume low. As for the noise cancelling mode, I only use that if I'm watching something or trying to listen to a podcast or audiobook. The noise cancelling is pretty decent as well. As for noise leaking, the 510BT leaked SO bad, but I don't think the noise leak is nearly as bad on these headphones, which is kind of the point of noise cancelling. As for battery, my 510BT would last two to three days. I still have yet to say how well these last with all day usage.
