5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a cheap radio for work, usable on GMRS if you follow the rules.
Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024
I’m a wind turbine tech, so staying in touch from the ground to the top of the tower is a big deal. Been using the 8W UV-5R for GMRS and some business frequencies and it’s worked out pretty well for me so far.

The range is solid. Whether I’m down below or up in the air, it gets the job done and cuts through interference. Clarity’s not perfect though. It’s fine for talking over wind and machine noise but don’t expect high-end quality or anything like that. For what it costs, it’s honestly good enough.

The battery has been better than I expected. It lasts through my shifts, even when it’s freezing cold out. A lot of gear craps out in the cold but this one doesn’t. Also it’s pretty light, I clip it on and don’t really notice it’s there till I need it. Programming it though was a bit of a pain. If you’ve never set up a radio like this, it’ll probably frustrate you at first, but once you figure it out it’s fine.

It's fairly durable, but you know, at this price point I can't complain. It feels a bit cheap so I’m careful not to drop it. The antenna that comes with it is just okay, I swapped it for a better one and that made a big difference in how it works.

Bottom line for the price it’s solid. Not perfect but it’s reliable and does what I need. If you’re working in rough conditions and just need something basic and affordable to stay in touch, it’s worth picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Cheerful
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2024
This is another review of the ubiquituous Baofeng UV-5R. It is an upgraded version in the same case and this unit after years of work finally meets the advertised specs of the original radio which is now several years on the market.

While advertised as an 8 watt radio our units provided for testing actually delivered a little over 5 and half watts on both bands into a non reactive 50 ohm load. Into the regular short antenna the radio produced 6.87 watts at a 3.9 swr on 2 meters and 5.8 watts at 1.68 swr on 70 centimeters. Into the provided long antenna the radio poduced just over 6.8 watts at 2.2 swr on 2 meters and 5.2 watts ar a 1.6 swr on 70 centimeters. And, to the relief of all of the regulators and rules nazis out there we were not able to measure any transmitted harmonics. The reciever measured a pretty consistent -130 db sensitivity on both bands.

This product changed amateur radio and two way radio communication especially in the US. With an under thirty dollar price tag, a useful feature set and reasonable communications capability it brought the first rung of amateur radio within the financial reach of just about anybody.

On the one hand, as many hams will quickly state, the radio is not a technical masterpiece in some areas. One of the most common complaints is that the harmonic suppression is alleged to be out of tolerance for US use. That issue has apparently been fixed on the newer radios. Another complaint that was recently addressed by the manufacturer was the fact that the radio was not limited to use in amateur bands and is not type accepted for use on the FRS or GMRS bands. Older models would transmit on any frequency you programmed. BF addressed this through software which can still be easily bypassed. There is no way to determine the number of these radios which have been illegally programmed to transmit on the license free FRS and MURS radio services. And, if you happen to live in an area which still uses analog for its police, fire and public safety services you can also use the radio for a scanner receiver. Just be advised illegally transmitting on those public service frequencies can be a serious crime.

These are cheap and cheerful little radios that some amateurs love to hate and others hate to love. While almost nobody will admit it, every two meter or seventy centimeter network in the US probably has few checking in every session. I have better radios but I used to sit in a shopping center parking lot while my wife shopped and work local nets with one. I left the little radio in the car and didn't worry about it getting stolen.

The bottom line is that the little radio will talk pretty reliably from point A to point B within the limits of VHF/UHF propagation, has good enough ears to be serviceable as a scanner and comes in at a cost point that makes it comfortable to use in situations where you would worry about your more expensive Yaesu or Icom handheld. It is also very common for hams to give one to a person thinking about getting into the hobby and then telling them to use it to listen to local repeater traffic. When they get their license they already have their first radio.

In a technical sense you get what you pay for. This is basically a one chip cheap radio not in the same league with more expensive ham radio offerings. But in practical use the little guys usually do the job well enough and on a repeater you often can't tell if the person is talking on a twenty five dollar UV-5R or a several hundred dollar Japanese rig.

In this case on this production run it would appear that Baofeng has fixed the issues and the UV-5R now meets or exceeds the older specs and runs legally in the US for ham use. It's a good buy for a twenty something buck radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic radio now with 8W of power and a larger battery
Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025
Same great UV-5R that's been out for years, only with a larger battery and 8W power (vs. 5W for the originals).

These are great starter radios, great for backups, great for keeping in your car and backpack, etc. They are classics for a reason...cheap, work great and are relatively easy to use and program.

This set is particularly nice because it includes everything you will need, plus extra antennas for the frequency that you'll use them for the most (match the antenna to the frequency for best results). I own several sets of radios like this and use them far more than I ever thought I might. They are worth their price just for the scanning and receiving capabilities across a wide range of frequencies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way more than I needed
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024
I struggled with this review because I have no real prior experience with walkie talkies. Out of the box, you get multiple antennas for varied distance, two walkie talkies, clips, and I think software and a cord to hook up a transceiver to a computer....I honestly haven't tried to figure that piece out because it's not something I need.

As far as using the devices, they're your standard push to talk / release to receive. They work well for communication across our house and across our property (4 acres). I've not had an opportunity to test past that. However, for the price it seems like a great value for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive range for the price

These walkie talkies have very long range for the price. The price is almost similar to toy walkie talkies but these can reach 1+ mile range. I've only tested for about a mile and it worked without issues.
These are great for starting hobbyists in ham radio or someone who just needs a reliable walkie talkie.
