5.0 out of 5 stars Solid dash cam!

Deciding on what to buy:
I slaved over trying to find a quality dash cam without breaking the bank. Hours of reading reviews, I finally decided to pull the trigger on VIOFO. The Mini 2 seemed the best solution for what I was looking for. Bought a 128GB San Disk Max Endurance (only because there was a reasonable price differenced than the VIOFO equivalent), and the polarizing lens.

Installation:
Watched several videos on installation, I thought I needed to wire it directly into the fuse box, but after a last minute decision, I decided to use my cigarette lighter adapter (which comes with the dash cam). Recording during parking wasn't a need I had so it made sense. Installing on a 2017 Honda Pilot the lighter plugin was perfectly placed to wrap the wire around the passenger side and directly behind the dash. The cord was easily hidden, behind the dash and behind all the panels, it literally took less than 10 minutes to install. I placed the dash cam directly behind the rear view mirror so it was hidden from normal view. But if I needed to get to the dash cam I could look from below or simply move my mirror slightly to gain access to the cam. Very content with the placement. The only thing that wasn't to my liking was how it stuck to the windshield. After placing as per the installation guide, I looked from the outside and noticed there was a reasonably large bubble in the center of the glue pad. I was able to easily pull it off so I retried to stick it on again. Similar results. However after almost a month of use, I have had no issues with it falling off. Time will tell. They do provide a second glue pad in the kit so if it falls off, I'll probably use the new pad.

Daily Use:
Most of the settings were great out of the box. I think I increased the resolution a little, didn't max that in fear of issues or exceptionally large files. Also set the wifi to 5.8 (I guess that's equivalent to wifi6?). I turned recording audio off as I didn't see that as a need we had. I think that's all I changed. Every time I start up the car, within a few seconds it makes the start up noise and then proceeds to tell me it is recording. Felt like the start up time was very reasonable. After turning off the car, it makes a shutoff noise. No issues in usage. We did go over some rough patch on the interstate through a construction zone and it indicated it was going to lock the recording. Has only happened through that stretch of road so I didn't reduce the accident sensitivity. Felt like that's a good option.

Mobile App:
Many reviews of other products indicated poor mobile app quality. I must say that I have found the app to be very stable. To connect your phone to the dash cam, hold down the wifi button and it will enable the wifi. I think recording has to be stopped for that to work. Use your phone to connect and you can now make configuration settings to the cam as well as select videos/images to download. My settings save a file every 3 minutes. And with my higher resolution setting, the video files are around 553MB each. Downloading files seemed very fast, consistent, with no issues. I believe you can watch the videos directly streaming from the cam or when you download them you can watch them from the app even if you are not connected to the cam. So far, no issues. One surprising fact was when playing back a recording in the app, at the bottom of the screen it shows the movement of the car on a map. Thought that was a nice little feature.

Quality of the video:
I'm very content with the quality of the video. The video is crisp, clear both day and night. No issues.

Overall:
Installation was fast and easy. Daily usage I've had zero issues. Mobile app is easy to use and have no issues. A great buy! Definitely recommend the the Mini 2. Will be buying more for the rest of my families cars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value dashcam

The A119 Mini 2 is reasonably priced and places itself in a niche area of the dashcam market for those who want a dashcam on a budget, but also want one with decent features and video quality.

As the packaging says, this camera records in 2k 60fps and has decent night vision. You won’t be able to get license plates from too far away like some more expensive models, but it’s good enough to get 2-3 cars ahead. Since this camera is small, I hardly notice it while driving as I placed it behind my rear-view mirror. The voice control comes in handy, in this case, as I wouldn't have to reach around if I wanted to lock a video, for example. I also appreciate that it has parking mode with sensitivity options if I wanted to hardwire it to my car at some point.

The only thing about this dashcam that could be improved is the app functionality. I had trouble viewing the videos through the app as it took a while to download from the camera to my phone. I usually prefer downloading videos directly to my PC anyways, but it's nice to know I have the option to use my phone if needed despite its hitches. The app is great, however, for changing any settings or updating the firmware if it needs one.

The install was extremely easy as the instructions were in clear and fluent English. The wire to my car's cigarette lighter was a perfect length, with hardly any extra wiring to hide away. The only thing I noticed was the lack of wire clips that I've seen come with other models that could help with routing the wire around my car's trim pieces.

Overall, this is an affordable dashcam that provides excellent video quality. It's perfect for those who need a simple, yet reliable, dashcam that gets the job done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be Aware if you live in very hot area
Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024
I bought this great little Viofo A119 Mini Dash Cam after a lot of research in Jul 2024. I bought this as part of the bundle with the Industrial Viofo Mico Disc. I found the camera very easy to set up and the app worked fine with my iPhone and iPad. Since I live outside of Phoenix, AZ I was particularly concerned, from everything I read, that I needed a Dash Cam with a SuperCapacitor versus a battery due to the extreme heat which I found to be good advice.

While I only have had the device for a short period, the Dash Cam works as expected EXCEPT for the last two days when I had to do some business later in the morning in Phoenix which meant about an hour of driving into the sun to the Phoenix metro area from my home. About 20 min from my home I started hearing a beeping sound coming from the Mini. It wouldn't stop and I pulled into a parking space at a convenience store to see if there was a disconnect somewhere or if I could determine the problem which I could not. I ran into a store for a few minutes and when I came out and started the engine the Dash Cam seemed to be fine again. On the road again it started beeping again after about 20 minutes and I thought possibly it was the outside temperature that was causing the problem. My outside temp reading car was 115° and windshield and unit was very hot to the touch. Note, I mounted the device on the windshield under a dark 6" strip of tint that I have at the very top of the my windshield thinking that that might keep the camera to stay a little cooler but as I found out that not to be the case. Bottom line, I can see that if you live in a climate like we have out here in the desert and you are driving into the sun with temps like we get mid summer then this camera may not work if it gets too hot regardless what you do.

In addition, like others I have read about, I also had a problem initially trying to keep the camera mounted to the windshield in this heat with what was provided with the camera by the manufacturer. I fixed that by replacing that with a quality 3M mounting tape.

Overall, I really like the camera but if anything happens on the road in front of me I just hope it doesn't happen when the temps are very high and this camera isn't working. I would give the camera a 5 star if this didn't happen to me but I am betting right now this won't happen with some cooler temps and I am not returning this unit as I am guessing any dash cam may well have the same problems with temps like this.
