A couple years ago I added a BOSS stereo to my 2013 Avalanche. I love the unit but it’s only wired CarPlay. I don’t mind plugging in as it’s only a mild inconvenience, but I ran into a huge issue: my CarPlay usb can’t provide enough amperage to charge my phone. Because of this, if I wanted to use CarPlay, I could only keep my phone at current charge at best.
This adapter completely fixed my problem. I love that it came with a 90 degree usb adapter, which was perfect for my setup. This way when I plug in the wireless adapter into my truck’s usb port in the console, it points down, not straight out, keeping it from breaking off when items get put in the center console. Wouldn’t have thought of that but was a huge help.
Paring with my phone was super easy, just connect to the Bluetooth and integrated WiFi. I also upgraded the firmware easily via its internal webpage. Note- if you upgrade your firmware, it takes a few minutes. Don’t refresh your webpage while updating or you’ll need to reset your connections and try again.
Once paired it had no problems interfacing with my BOSS unit and my iPhone. As soon as I start the car, my phone instantly connects and maps pop up now. I can also charge my phone when needed via a high amperage charger without affecting CarPlay capabilities.
I’ve used this for 2 fairly long trips so far and it works like a champ. No loss in functionality from when I was using a wired connection and only added features making my experience so much better.
I’ll also note, this is my first time using wireless CarPlay, so I’m assuming this is standard, but if you are curious, it seems like CarPlay data connection is via WiFi and audio is via Bluetooth, so make sure both are enabled and set to auto connect on your phone.
In summary, if you have wired CarPlay only, this is a perfect way to add the wireless capability and is highly recommended

He said that it took a bit of fiddling to get it all connected to Bluetooth, but once he got it all configured, it's been doing fine. Besides the ability to auto-connect, it does allow him to use a more powerful charger to boost his battery, and the hands-free operation is a plus.
