5.0 out of 5 stars Your Co-Pilot for Roadside Karaoke
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024
Meet my new car buddy, the Amazon Echo Auto! This little gadget has transformed my car into a mobile command center. Not only does it handle my playlist, but it also solves my endless road trip debates with instant answers - because who doesn't need to know the population of Timbuktu while stuck in traffic?

Navigating? Done. Weather updates? Easy. Impromptu karaoke sessions? Bring it on. My car has become the ultimate concert hall, and I’m the star (sorry, not sorry, fellow drivers).

Installation was a breeze, and now my car's decked out with voice-controlled everything. Hands-free calls, hilarious jokes on demand, and even reminders to pick up milk on the way home.

If you’re looking to add a touch of tech magic to your ride, the Echo Auto is your go-to co-pilot. Just don't be surprised if your car starts feeling smarter than you! lol

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but great for me, & better than 1st gen

*** if you are attempting to connect with a newer phone, see my update below***

I recently used a rental for a week that had Android Auto. I loved the voice commands. I felt far less distracted. Alas, I can't afford a new car, and, well, frankly love mine. I drive a 2015 Honda Pilot. I was curious if there were after market ways to add the voice commands and stumbled across the Echo Auto.
We have been big Alexa and Amazon devices for a long, long time (we're talking owners of the 1st gen Kindle). I remembered my husband had participated in the Echo Auto when it first released. He wasn't sure where he'd placed it - his truck has Android Auto, so he doesn't use the Echo Auto. He suggested I try the 2nd gen because it had a lot of upgrades.
Now, first of all, I should note I wanted voice commands for my music. I'm pretty protective about my music, and want it to play smoothly. I mostly use Spotify, but also use Amazon Music. I also figured it'd be handy to have texts read to me, and maybe to answer them, as my family with newer cars forget I don't have Android Auto. My car does have Bluetooth and does handle hands-free calls.
I found the Echo Auto easy to install. I'm not sure why the instructions have you mount it first before setup, but I ignored that and set it up first. It walks you through setup as most their devices do, and it was easy. I particularly liked that I had the option to not have it handle phone calls, but could have it handle text messages. It has you select your default apps for music and entertainment, as well as maps. You can also opt out of having the Echo Auto control these.
As for day to day use, it controls my music just as well as any of the devices in my house. There is occasionally some confusion as I have Spotify set as my default music app, so if I want a Playlist on Amazon Music, I have to specify Amazon Music. It reads texts messages well. My only complaint is you can't specify a contact to read the text from, so you have to allow it to read all unread texts in order they were received. It's been inconsistent on sending texts. Sometimes it works like a charm, sometimes not. It doesn't bother me as I'd rather be focused on the road and my music. Having it read the text so I can find out if it is urgent is enough. I haven't used it to navigate, but it opened Maps fine when I tested it.

***UPDATE - I upgraded my phone from Samsung Galaxy S21+ to Samsung Galaxy S24+. I had to reset the Echo Auto. After many attempts, and resets and other tweaks, I finally got it to work. It would go through the setup process fine, but when I asked Alexa something, the blue ring would light, but no sound whatsoever. So, to save someone else the headache, here's how I fixed it. I un-installed the Alexa app from my phone, rebooted my phone (mostly cause that's what I do) and reinstalled the Alexa app. Setup was seamless after and I haven't had any issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome bluetooth replacement

I love this little device. My older car only has an aux port and no bluetooth so I immediately got this and now I can voice control my music and text. Ill admit the first 2 weeks or so the connectivity was a little iffy but after that I havent had a single connectivity issue unless I am in an area with no phone signal. Warning however this device can overheat if placed in direct sunlight and left in a hot car. However after having the air conditioner on for a minute or 2 it comes back to life pretty quickly and is ready to go. Luckily for me it only happened during a major heat wave in my area. If you want something relatively cheap that can connect your phone to your car speakers without needing an aux cord I would definitely get this little device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring Alexa and All of Its Hands. Free Features to Your Vehicle....No Wifi Needed

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this device at first. My major concern was that I needed wifi or an additional service for it to work. That was not the case however, I did not need to anything other then my phone. It connects through my phone using my already existing cellular service. It mounts to your vehicle with a magnetic mount that makes it easy to transfer the device between vehicles with additional mounts in them. The mount sticks very well to my vehicle using the included double sided tape and the magnet holds the device very securely. It has not yet slipped or fell since I installed it. Connecting device is very easy though the Alexa app on your phone. It actually walks you through the set up, step by step.

So fr (knock on wood), I have not had any connectivity issues. The device fires right up as soon as I turn my vehicle on. It is an extension of my home Alexa devices and works in the same manner and does the same things, bit through my phone. It is hands free and I do not need to have my phone open to use it. You will find a mute button on the device that stops it from actively listening to you.

As for sound quality, it has ore do do with the sound system in your car then with the device itself. The device does not have a problem hearing or understanding my voice, even when I am driving with my window down. When I am listening to Amazon Music through it, get out of my car, return and start my car back up, Amazon Music will pick up where it left off but sometimes the song breaks up and I end up having to stop the song and ask Alexa to either play that song again or play a new one. This is minor to me.

As I mentioned, I can do everything you can do with your standard Echo devices that you can do with this, minus video calls. I can make hand free calls, ask. questions, listen to Amazon Music, get sports scores, hear news by using the standard Alexa voice commands. I really like this device. My only other issue, which is minor as well, is that it takes up one of your vehicles USB ports, which may be a problem with a vehicle with just one or even two.

Anyway,, I am glad that I purchased this device and I highly recommend it.
