About this item

MEATLESS ALTERNATIVE: Our Organic Young Jackfruit is an excellent vegan, soy & gluten free meatless alternative to use in numerous recipes. A mild flavor makes it a great base for sauces & seasonings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vegan option for BBQ
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2024
Squeezed this out in cheesecloth (lots of liquid) and smoked this with some rub and sauce for vegan guests. It's not going to fool any BBQ snobs for pulled pork taste but was a great legit BBQ option for those with dietary restrictions.

Pretty neutral taste out of the can (just a bit of salt and lime from the canning). You don't *need* to remove the seeds but the "shell" can be a bit tough to chew once it separates from the seed. So I would peel this or discard the seeds if you have the time.

I did a side by side of the canned jackfruit and the bagged, vacuum sealed jackfruit from the same company and canned is definitely the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb product. And it's BIG
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023
The only not-so-good thing about this product is that it's really big – maybe even too much for just one day. But considering the price, it's a good idea to cook a lot at once and save some for later in the fridge.

At first, I was a little worried because it was cheaper than other options. But I'm happy I picked this one. It has a lot of Jack fruit inside, so it's a great deal. It tastes better and is better quality compared to the smaller cans that only have a few pieces.

I'm also happy to know that this product comes from Sri Lanka, a place where Jack Fruit trees are plentiful. It's nice to have a connection to where it's from.

I also did not expect one giant can! ????
But the product was good. Shredded and put remainder in the freezer.

If you ever thought of vegetarian ‘meat’ tacos for dinner, think no further & give jackfruit a try! You will not be disappointed. Easy to handle, season and taste just like the real deal.

I love this product but it came in a bag and not a box. Half of my cans are dented. They won’t let me replace or return. Very disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars The Curious Fruit That Tastes Like Meat
Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2020
This is a review of Native Forest Organic Young Jackfruit

As a caterer, you quickly understand that most folks have different tastes, and to be successful you need to be a bit creative. You would not believe some of the requests we get. But one of the biggest divides is: People who eat meat, and those that do not. What is even more fun is when they request for an event without meat… But they want it to taste like meat.

And, that is where Jackfruit come into the picture.

Simply stated, Jackfruits (odd name) sole purpose in life is to take on the flavors of the spices you add to it, and make it taste like a protein (beef, pork; even chicken). It accomplishes this feat by having the bite and mouthfeel of real meat… For example, cook some up with your favorite BBQ sauce, stick it on a bun, and there you go.

My research led me to several brands until I settled on this one.

    What You Get
Six 14-ounce (400g) cans of jackfruit, with a convenient pull-top lid… no can opener required.

My six came well packaged with not a dent or leak in the lot.

I consider the fruit in the cans of excellent quality and have used it to dish up some wonderful faux meat recipes.

Note: Jackfruit comes packaged different ways. If you goal is to use this product to create faux meat dishes, then it should be young jackfruit, and come packed in filtered water with a pinch of sea salt, and possibly a dash of lime juice. And, being organic is a good thing.

This product fits all those requirements.

This is not a cooking class; just a product review (there are plenty of jackfruit recipes on the internet for you to peruse).

But when I use this product to make things like pulled pork or beef, most of my clients cannot tell the difference from the real thing.

Let me end by showing you two photos of what a finished jackfruit recipe looks like.

Figure-1: I call this my Asian BBQ pulled pork.

Figure-2: I baked the fruit into a Mexican Beef and Cheese Casserole.

Question: Do either of those photos look like fruit to you?

    Bottom Line
If you are a vegetarian, or vegan, but you miss the taste and mouthfeel of meat, you should check out jackfruit.
Or, if you eat meat, but want to try something different. I say go for it.

I liked it a lot. Even if it's just stir fried on ghi after washing it and squeezing water out, it's very tasty. I will buy it again.
