About this item

Textured Vegetable Protein is a rich, nutritious soy product and a great alternative to meat.
High in fiber and protein, Textured Vegetable Protein absorbs flavors in recipes and sauces.
Try it in vegan chili, sprinkled over soups and salads, or use it to make a plant-based bolognese sauce.
Reconstitute by mixing 1-part Textured Vegetable Protein to 1-part hot water or broth. Let soak 5-10 minutes. Refrigerate reconstituted mixture if not used right away.
Store in a cool, dry place. We do not recommend refrigeration or freezing of the Textured Vegetable Protein.
Allergens: Contains Soy. Packaged in a facility that processes dairy, soy, peanuts, and wheat products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable taste, texture, & price

I love making quesadillas, chilis, pastas, and sausage gravy with this. It's super high in protein and has a kind of "nothing" flavor, so can be used for just about anything. Literally obsessed, and can't find better priced TVP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Meat Substitute

Excellent meat substitute. Product has a neutral taste and will take on whatever seasoning you use. Consistency is like crumbled beef. Great value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value

I wish there were more large chunks in the bag, almost half it it is powder or close to that. I attempted to sift out large pieces to use separately but the lumpy crunchy shape didn't lend itself well to that effort. In any event, this is a good deal for this amount of TVP and it's a great vegetarian protein boost that's easy to add to almost anything.

We love this TVP! We use it in soups, sloppy joes in the crockpot, and for additional protein in various recipes. We've made a faux ground meat with this TVP and some seasonings, as well. The price is competitive to local stores, and the quality is consistent and delicious. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's really easy to prepare
Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2018
First time trying TVP, and it was honestly way beefier than I thought it was going to be. I've already made lasagna and tacos with it. I shared a batch with my carnist mother and she was impressed and said it was the meatiest plant product she's tried, even meatier than the frozen crumbles you can buy at the grocery store.

It's really easy to prepare. Just re-hydrate in an equal volume of water or broth. One dry cup with one cup of liquid, for example. I've found that it's edible after soaking in warm broth for a couple minutes, but it's even better after a simmer. I use two dry cups where recipes would call for a pound of beef (so roughly 5 pounds from a bag) which gives me a little extra to snack on while cooking. I recommend using broth instead of water even if you plan to season it for your recipe because it absorbs a lot of flavor during that initial hydration. Even with taco seasoning on top, I didn't find the flavor to be overpowering.

I also love how much potassium is in it since I don't get the recommended DV of it most days and don't feel like eating 10 bananas.

NO COOKING DIRECTIONS! | 11 months til expiration | Re-sealable Plastic | Long & Awkward Packaging

---

NOTE: There's NO DIRECTIONS on the package!

---

Bought = Apr '17
Expiration = 3-20-18

So, you have less than a year to eat this (~ 11 months)

INGREDIENT: Defatted Soy Flour
(This is the only thing listed on the sticker)

---

OTHER INFO (on sticker):
- 53% protein
- Caramel Color

---

NUTRITION INFO:
- Serving Size = 1 tbsp

- 40 cal / serving

- Sodium = 1 mg

- Carb = 3.5g | 1%

- Fiber = 2 g | 8%

- Sugar = 1.5 g

- Protein = 6 g | 12%

- 0 fat

- 0 cholesterol

* I prefer if it was actually "0 mg" sodium vs 1 mg.
So, even though it says "0%" sodium, it's NOT actually sodium-free...since this has 1 mg of sodium!

* I wish they would increase the amount of Fiber & the amount of Protein (per serving)

* I wish they would have included a photo of the BACK (clear, large, zoomable).

---

SUGARS: 1.5 g
I wish it did NOT have sugar.
Or if they did, they could use stevia or a natural sweetener (that's also 0 calorie).

---

There's a CLEAR part of the plastic, on the front.

This is good, so you can easily & quickly see what's inside.
It's convenient for knowing what exactly is stored in there.

I'm visual, so I like to be able to SEE.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS:
They can improve the packaging by using a square shaped plastic, instead of the long one that they currently use.

The long shape is awkward, especially for storing in the pantry or wherever you'd store it.

Also, although it looks long...it's actually only FILLED HALFWAY.

Even if it was filled more to the top, a SQUARE shape would be more ideal & less awkward (making it easier to store).

*** I've bought Hoosier Hill Farm before. So far, I like their stuff but there's always room for improvement :)

A similar brand is "Augason Farms".
Augason Farms Beef Flavored Vegetarian Meat Substitute 37 oz #10 Can

These are similar except Augason comes in a can & this comes in a plastic.
The plastic bag looks like it's re-sealable, which is a good thing!
It's also notched on both ends, so that makes it easier to open (without needing scissors)...if that matters =)
