This chili crisp has quickly become a staple in our home—we seriously put it on just about everything: from popcorn to dumplings, fry dip to pizza, eggs to burritos, etc etc. I love the ‘sophisticated’ kind of heat it brings to the table. Unlike sauces/condiments/oils that overwhelm taste buds with sheer Scoville units, this chili crisp offers up a more refined, realistic warmth that builds gradually as you eat or have more (at least that’s how it is for me!). I’d say that it’s a heat that enhances rather than dominates, if that makes sense, which makes it incredibly versatile for my personal tastes.
The flavor profile is where Fly By Jing’s chili crisp truly shines. I wish I knew how to describe it well, but for me it’s somehow both subtle and strong at the same time? ‘Subtle’ in that it doesn’t overpower your dish but ‘strong’ in that you just know it’s there, making all the difference. The richness of the oil, the blend of spices, and those delightful little black beans create a complex, umami-laden experience that adds a whole new dimension to whatever I’m eating.
And since I’m already singing my praises here, I might as well also sneak in how pretty I find the chili crisp itself to be, with its rich red oil—as visually appealing as it is delicious. Unlike many hot sauces that change the entire flavor of your dish, this chili crisp enhances the existing flavors while adding its own savory, umami magic. Maybe I’m just new to chili crisp oil in general, but I find it to be unlike anything else out there which is why it’s now one of our pantry essentials.
