5.0 out of 5 stars I love these!

Okay, I love these! You get a ton in the bag, so the price is really worth it. They are easy to cook and I personally find them really versatile. I often use them in stirfy, but have also used them in wraps and salads etc. They are flavourless, so I'd recommend cooking them in some kind of stock or with spices to get the flavour you desire. Texture is good and they are quite filling! Def recommend for an easy, versatile veg protein.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taste Like Chicken
Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024
This plant-based meat alternative is made from defatted beans it does not have a taste so whatever you flavor it with it will take on the taste. I simmer it in vegan chicken broth then give it a stir fry in some olive oil to add some fat and it is very good. I use this to make curry chicken, jerk, sweet ‘n’ sour, general T’so, and the list goes on. It has a good texture and is very reminiscent of chicken if you cook it right. I make dishes in bulk and freeze them and this freezes very well one bag goes a long way. If you are looking for a meat alternative give this a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TVP Product
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024
Really great protein product, the unflavored option allows this product to be a lot more versatile than the preflavored options and since I have to watch my sodium intake adding the flavoring and seasonings that I want allows me to control the amount of sodium and give the product different flavors e.g. chicken, beef, etc... and the texture even tricked my brother-in-law when he ate some of my "no bean chili" that I made for the 4th and he thought the slices of TVP were slices of meat until he asked me what kind of meat I used in the chili and I reminded him that I was a vegetarian and that I did not cook with meat.

These are soy “chips” and tough no matter how long you cook them. Very dissatisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent soy protein addition to soups and sauces
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2023
This soy protein is a really nice way to get some additional protein in vegetarian dishes. It keeps quite a long time, and is easy to use. My only complaint is that the pieces are HUGE....the protein expands as it's exposed to liquid, so my mistake the first time was leaving the size as-is. We ended up with large, very chewy chunks that were wholly unappetizing, even disguised in a hearty bean soup. I realized that it's much better to put the desired amount in my mini Cuisinart and break those pieces into very small chunks (remember, they expand!). Aside from that, we like the texture much better than tofu. I'll buy this protein again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took a chance, and for a change it worked out!

I am not vegan or vegetarian, but I don’t eat meat often. I discovered TVP/soy strips/chunks, etc. maybe ten years ago and loved them. They taste basically like whatever you want them to taste like. I had a vendor I used to buy from online back 10+ years ago - they were great, but then the prices skyrocketed. I looked for other options and found one on Amazon and got a GREAT deal on soy strips, but then they seem to have gone out of business, so I was in the market looking again. I came across the Plant Basics soy chunks and the price was reasonable for a one pound bag. But the price was fantastic for a 6lb bulk bag! I was reluctant to order the 6# bag since I had never tried them before, but the value was too great to turn down so I bit the bullet. VERY glad I did… these are exactly the right size and shape I was looking for as a chicken replacement in soups and stir fries. The rehydrate well (can rehydrate in just water, or in a broth of some kind. I don’t recommend hydrating directly in what you are cooking - often these type of products can have a slightly weird taste that is completely eliminated if you hydrate them first and then drain off the moisture. The bulk order arrives in a LARGE plastic bag - no frills. I removed them from the large bag and put them in several heavy duty ziplock-type bags (MUCH more heavy duty than the actual ZL bags), as well as some large glass jars. These theoretically would last pretty much indefinitely assuming stored properly but the reality is that I will go through them in a year or so. Am EXTREMELY pleased with the product and hope the company stays in business so I don’t have to search for a vendor again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good texture, easy to prepare. Just follow the instructions and know what to expect.

First off, forget about the reviews that complain about the taste. These are UNFLAVORED, people! And that is the point. They are supposed to absorb whatever flavor you want to infuse them with, and they do just that. But don't expect to be completely successful before dealing with the learning curve. I'm not quite through mine, but still find these perfectly easy to use, satisfying to eat, and I'm getting better with each try at infusing flavor into them.

The #1 key is to properly reconstitute the strips first. It helps to use a good broth or bullion, but it's not crucial to do so. But if you do, mind your sodium -- these will pull a lot of salt out of whatever you initially boil them with.

Once you have the strips reconstituted, you'll want to dry them a bit before use -- that tightens them up to a much more meat-like bite consistency. Otherwise, they may come out a bit soggy, especially in a more wet application like a curry. From there, I highly recommend pan frying them a bit like you would any meat, to add a bit of fat and carmelization -- let a little umami in. Then from there, the sky's the limit.

Just remember, read the instructions, get to know the product. And remember, you are responsible for adding whatever flavor this protein will give back. Do that, and you'll be as pleased as I've been with your purchase. :)
