I like to have tinned fish for supper 2-4 times a week - just a little snack later at night. I'm always looking for new kinds of fish to try. This garfish is definitely new to me.
It is a narrow fish, very dense, very meaty. The texture is comparable to kipper, though it is not bony nor as harsh in flavor, the olive oil playing a significant role in the profile. I found it slightly acrid, but not overwhelmingly so. I added a little bit of salt to cut the acridity but that's about it. I'd say this is flavorful enough that you can have it with good white bread or a fluffy pita and you'd have the makings of light refreshment.
The tin is pretty well packed with fish, you get plenty in there, there's not a lot of excess oil, so the value is good. I don't think it would replace sardines, mackerel, or tuna, but it'd be nice to have in the rotation, anyway. I definitely recommend giving it a try, if you are in to this sort of thing.
