What is Malic Acid?

Malic Acid is a naturally occuring acid found in many fruits. Apples are the No. 1 natural source of Malic Acid and, in fact, of an apple’s total acid content, over 90 percent is Malic Acid.

Malic Acid has a pleasant and slightly tart aroma and is used as a souring agent for foods, drinks and making candy.

It is often used interchangeably with citric acid; however, while Malic acid is quite sour - it’s not as harsh as citric acid. Imagine biting into a juicy Granny Smith apple—the sourness is refreshing and puckering but much different than biting into fresh citrus. This is the kind of acid we call on to mimic the type of acidity you might find in apples, grapes or rhubarb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very tart!

I don't have anything to test purity, but ratios in comparison with other products seem to have equal effectiveness in my soda pop and cooking needs. 2lbs is a lot, but was a good value and I will use in a few recipes. This stuff has to be very pure because a 1-2g extra can really affect the tartness of the end soda.

I got this to make lime super juice and it works great! The particles are fine and free flowing with essentially no clumping.

I add this to lemonade, jello, popsicles, and candy to make anything super sour. Tastes great and even more sour than warheads or toxic waste candies, also more sour than Barnetts mega sours.
If you use too much it makes your throat burn and tongue raw, it can be extreme if not used sparingly, exactly what I wanted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large Granual

This says powder but it is 1st and foremost NOT a powdered product.
It is a large granulated product, think of a large pick rock salt shaker, clearly defined, visually geometric shapes.
As such if what you intend requires POWDER you will need to take an extra step and put this in a food processor of some sort or grind it yourself.
Otherwise it is the best value per ounce on Amazon.

Not sure what the other uses are for malic acid, but it worked great for making super juices--concentrated citrus juices used in mixed drinks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Broken bag
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2024
The bag arrived pierced and the acid spilt all over my other products in my order. There isnt an option to request a refund for this product because it’s not returnable.

This is not the first time the packaging arrived pierced/cracked/broken from this brand. I prefer to buy in bulk, but the quality diminishes when the vacuum seal breaks, and of course the product spillage isn’t ideal
