5.0 out of 5 stars Apple maggot /apple fly/ codling moth cure!
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2022
I had tried soooo many different methods to keep the maggots from eating my apples. Lures, traps, sticky tape, pheromones, tree bark barrier….you name it. But, year after year, come harvest, my hopes were dashed with the vast majority of my apples (90-95%) being eaten through. The apples from all three (Fuji, pink lady, honey crisp) and pears from the Anjou were so unappetizing that I couldn’t even bring myself to use the good parts for applesauce. But just last year, while I only got approx 50 apples total from all three espaliered trees, (most blossoms/fruit had wilted/rotted prematurely prior to any covering -the poor trees were just hanging onto life) approx 90-95% of all fruit covered made it to August/Sept without any holes!. Healthy, happy and delicious. This year (late May) I had to buy 2 boxes (100 count each) and there still are so many individual fruits that I couldn’t get to- there were too many. After only one season of covering, this spring only about 5% wilted/rotted prematurely. The trees practically sang to me telling how happy they are to be given their lives back. I’ll be happy to let the flies have a few, but not ever again let them overwhelm the trees as long as I have these covers!
It’s labor intensive to put all covers on, and reapply after wind storms take some off, but I can’t recommend any other method for the home gardener. Enjoy the process!

5.0 out of 5 stars Barriers work & no chemicals that hurt the bees!

The best product to protect my organic apples from Apple maggot stings. They are like Granny support hose so they are thick & can expand as the apple grows bigger. I use twine, see the video, to keep the barriers on as it gets windy here nearly every day. At the end of the season, when the apples are ready to be harvested, I can see they are without blemishes & more importantly they are free of the Apple maggots. These sturdy barriers can be washed and used again seasonally. NOT intended for large orchards unless you've got lots of money to buy lots of the barriers, as well as lots of workers to put them on each apple.

Too big and too thick to successfully wrap around the apple stem and if you succeed it's unlikely that they will stay wrapped because of the thickness.

This package arrived quickly but I won’t be using it until spring so I can’t personally vouch for its effectiveness. However, it was well recommended by an organic orchard grower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!

I have used this product for three years now and basically the apples that get covered are edible, those that are not covered have to be thrown away. Do not bother with cheaper socks as even doubled up they do not compare (think fish net vs. "Granny" nylons). I will not waste my time trying anything else again. Yes, it can be tedious, but fairly quick with 4" zip ties to secure the socks on the apples. Well worth the effort to have chemical and bug-free fruit.

You might as well cut up old nylons and save yourself money. Apple were still majorly infected

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes over your fruit

These are pantyhose that cover your fruit. I twist two ends and tie them together to keep my apples covered. I put these on after June drop so I don't have to spray my trees beyond that.

Used dental rubber bands. You can use on dwarf apple trees. I spray my large trees.
