For those with sensitive teeth, this is an important read.
I've always used a manual toothbrush until February 2024, when I switched to the iO 9 Oral B, which included three Ultra Clean toothbrush heads. The clean sensation post-brushing was remarkable. Aware of my tooth sensitivity, I strictly used the gum or sensitive settings.
Yet, after three months, I began experiencing tooth pain, heightened sensitivity to temperature variations in food and drinks, and even sharp pain when inhaling air through my mouth. Initially, I was baffled by the cause, altering my toothpaste and mouthwash in response. The pain was intermittent, and with my dentist fully booked for a month, I was left in discomfort.
When everything else failed, you might wonder what I did. I gave up my iO Oral B and switched back to a manual toothbrush—a SOFT one, like the ones I've used since childhood. After just a few days, my teeth settled down entirely. I no longer had any issues with temperature sensitivity, just as I hadn't for my whole life.
I continued using my manual toothbrush for about a week, then decided to compare the bristles to those on the brush heads that came with my iO brush. The difference was astonishing. The iO Oral B brush heads were significantly harder than the soft manual brush. The iO packaging provided no indication of bristle hardness; there were no labels such as S/M/H. It's no surprise that my teeth began to ache eventually—I have always used soft brushes, as recommended by dentists.
The logical next step was to explore alternative brush heads for the costly iO Oral B toothbrush. I discovered ones labeled "Gentle Care, High density dentist-inspired extra soft bristles." Given that Oral B is a dentist-recommended brand, it stands to reason that these Gentle Care brush heads ought to be the standard inclusion with their premium brushes. The default Ultimate Clean brush heads are excessively firm, even on the Super Sensitive setting without activating the pressure ring to turn red. A simple comparison by running your thumb over the Gentle Care brush head versus the Ultimate Clean one makes the difference evident.
I would recommend this brush to anyone who uses an iO Oral B toothbrush. It provides an excellent clean and is much gentler on your teeth and gums. Whether you have sensitive teeth or not, using the regular heads could be damaging your enamel and gums.
