I bought this as a gift for my dad for this upcoming Father's Day so he has not seen it yet, but I know he will love it. he loves Kershaw and smaller knives, so this was perfect. I did inspect it to make sure of the quality and I was impressed. The assisted open is a really nice feature, it opens very easy and feels sturdy. and I can't forget to mention how sharp it is, if you wanted to you could shave with it. looking forward to seeing his reaction on Father's Day

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little knife
Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2013
I was looking for an assisted opening knife that was small enough to fit in the change pocket of my jeans. This is PERFECT for that.

Pros:
-Speed safe is super quick with the flipper
-Knife is very sharp
-The tip is like a needle and perfect for precision work
-Small size is perfect for EDC - you forget it's even there
-Great Kershaw build quality
-Easy to take apart and clean
-420HC steel is easy to sharpen
-Great jimping

Cons:
-Blade shape makes it hard to sharpen. The recurve part near the handle makes it impossible to sharpen on a flat stone. That really only affects a 1/4" section, so not a deal breaker.
-Deployment lock can get annoying. I have it tightened to the open or "unlocked" position. I don't feel a need to use it. You probably could completely remove it if you were determined. I have had it accidentally lock itself, which is the annoying part when you go to deploy the blade, but again not a deal breaker.
-Thumb studs are basically useless for deployment. They are mainly there as a blade stop. Don't try to use them, it can end up being sort of dangerous. I've seen a few people nearly cut themselves using the thumbstud for deployment (me included) simply because the blade is so small. Stick with the flipper.
- The flipper is so easy to engage that the knife can open in your pocket. Some of you reading might be yelling at the computer now. "Use the deployment lock!" Yes, the lock is there for a reason, but I've only had it open once so I feel like it's a rare occurrence.
-Clip is not a deep carry. Considering the knife is so small, having that half inch of knife sticking out when using the clip is sort of a significant portion of the knife. It just makes using the clip a bit unsteady feeling. I leave the clip on for a little extra size when holding and using the knife, so it's not useless.

All in all it has some drawbacks, but I think it's a beautiful little knife which I absolutely love. Perfect little blade to carry with you all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ditched the Leatherman

I was looking for a "flip" style blade for my EDC and chose this and would definitely choose it again. I was previously carrying a Leatherman Style CS, which can be very alluring given the bells and whistles, but fell out of favor with me because the blade wasn't very sharp and was a bit wobbly. I also found that when I went for my pocket knife, 90% of the time, I was after just that -- the knife. Not the (dull) scissors, or the tweezers, or the nail file, but the blade. Occassionally it came in handy for the bottle opener, but I've just as easily used the Kershaw and the good ol' pry method more than a couple times, with no scratching or scuffing of the The Chive's finish I might add!

That said, I still keep my Leatherman Skeletool in my backpack for times when I need a multi-tool, but I digress.

The Chive is compact, well designed, well built, and sharp! The "flip" mechanism took some breaking-in before it fully deployed the blade. I also slightly loosened the screw at the top and immediately noticed a difference. There are two locks on the knife. One to keep the blade from accidentally deploying and the frame lock to ensure, once fully deployed, the blade remains in the open position. It's also very easy to open via the "speed safe" flipper, or the thumb nubs, which are on both sides. The top side (above the thumb nubs) also has ridges. It would have been nice if the pocket clip was reversible, but not a big deal for me (left-handed), since I clip mine to the back edge of my left pocket, so if I were to accidentally bump something and the blade lock wasn't engaged, the blade is blocked by the back seam of the pocket. No issues with that so far, thankfully.

I could understand some reviewers with larger hands having trouble handling this, but I wear a medium work (gardening, mechanics) glove and it's a perfect size. Well done, Kershaw, The Chive is a fine blade!

This is my goto for my daily carry. Kershaw quality is unmatched as always. I especially like the compact size of the knife and the Speedsafe assist! The 420HC Steel blade keeps a sharp edge even with constant use. The knife is a bit pricey but the made in the USA tag makes it worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Small but very useful

They say the best knife is the one you have on you. Well, this little guy is ALWAYS on me. I should probably make it clear that I was a Spyderco dragonfly guy for the longest time but this knife is so compact and useful I always come back to it. I have been carrying it for a little over 8 months and it has fulfilled my EDC needs perfectly. I usually pair it with my skyline, rat 1, or Kershaw blur and find that when something needs cut this knife will do the job. I have used it for light whittling, opening packages, cutting zip ties, peeling fruit and many other tasks! I took the torsion bar out and it still works beautifully!

Pros: compact and useful with a lanyard hole that will fit 550 paracord. Sheeple friendly while also being capable to do what you need to do. Really impressed by the solid lock and build. It may be small but it certainly does not fee cheap!

Cons: 420 is not my favorite steel but it is adequate. If Kershaw were to improve the steel I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Bottom line: an excellent small edc knife that won’t get you in trouble but still highly capable!

I have always loved Kershaw products. But this Chive is just awesome. Sleek design, not bulky. Open assist with blade lock. Feels good in the hand. I have a ton of knives, but this is the one I want in my pocket at all times.
