This tracker is based on the R111, which I already have, even though branded differently (but absolutely identical in appearance and specs to R111). The difference between this tracker and the R111 is the addition of a very audible buzzer and the shorter duration of run on the full charged battery. This shorter duration is stated to be “up to 3 hours”. Three hours is more than I have drone batteries for, so this is sure to cover all flights I can do in one day. I did not get to ascertain whether this duration is actually accurate in real use, I can only tell the battery does last past the three hours mark when the module is just left turned on without being mounted on a drone and used in flight.
The setup is straightforward, and the included instructions are well written in this respect. I appreciate that there are several ways of attaching this module to the drone, though for the very specific usage of finding a lost / crashed drone the Velcro and sticky tape attaching methods are not really useful, they may get the tracker separated from the drone exactly at the time it is needed the most to remain affixed to the drone. I did not have a need yet to locate a drone by the buzzer, but I think it is adequate in how loud it is when the location is within a few yards, counting on the GPS accuracy to lead you close enough to the location. The issue this tracker solves is to guide you when the drone location is obstructed visually, like in tall grass or down a cliff. Now, if the GPS locating fails, it’s going to be a matter of luck getting close enough to activate and hear the buzzer.
One thing missing from the specs is whether this tracker is weatherproof, and water resistant. Wouldn’t be helpful at all if a crash in wet conditions disables the tracker. Nor would it if dust or high humidity could knock out this device. So, omitting this info from the spec doesn’t look right to me.
There is no word on having the broadcast info encrypted or somehow protected in usage. There is obvious legitimate use to avoid in-air collisions and to enforce fly zoning restrictions, but making this info available to anyone that has the means to receive it looks a bit too broad to me, possibly exploitable for tracking individual’s locations by anyone with the knowledge and means.
For one last concern, the terms and conditions of the app are worth a good read. The software pertains to a company from a different country, so things may get legally complicated around data collection and usage.
