5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Locking! Double check pinout!
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024
I probably spent too much time shopping for a GPS but am very happy I settled on this m10. I haven’t bothered with the mini as I wanted the larger antenna for reliability and signal.

It is harder to get a lock indoors but not impossible if you wait a minute. however when using it outdoors I get a lock in less than 10 seconds. Always have 20+ sats.

Be careful of the pinout though! I had to completely rearrange the wires into the connectors to match the standard gps layout for flight controllers. I was lucky I didn’t fry my flight controller because 5v and gnd went into the i2c lines and vice versa but given the nature of i2c nothing burnt out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast to lock. Easily inegrated into my ESP32 project

I had hoped for documentation, including engineering specifications, but exactly none is provided.

The pictures and description are a little misleading. What's pictured is actually two sides of the same board. It described both the M100 and the M100-5583 as the GPS, but that's simply not true. They show them as two separate parts, but they're on the same circuit board; in their pictures, they're showing two different boards, with the second flipped. Between the two, your device - like a plane - should be able to determine both its location on the surface of the planet AND its orientation, like pitch, yaw, and roll, as is useful for determining camera orientation.

Best I can figure out, the "M100" refers to the Ultrablox UBX-M10050-KB that's the actual GPS receiver chip responsible for decorrelation of the SV signals from the various satellite constellations, and the "5883" refers to the QMC5883 i2c-based, tri-axial magnetometer by QST. The equivalent Honeywell 5883L is being deprecated. It seems the GPS antenna is on one side while the actual GPS receiver and the orientation sensor is on the other side of the board. That sensor seems to add about a dollar over the price of a module without the 3DOF sensor.

Connectign TX and RX to their mates on an ESP32-S3 was easy. Power light came on immediately, with the blue PPS light coming on once you have a satellite fix. In less than a minute, I was able to parse sentences indicating the presence of US GPS satellites as well as EGNOS (EU) and GLONAss (Russian). I expccted the micro that was driving the correlators to integrate the 3DOF readings into the NMEA stream, in AS08 sentences, but I was unable to find that data in the output. I suspect it's kept completely separate on the i2C bus and as such, was unable to test that before review time.

It's a good value for a two pack and I have a project in mind that will make good use of the small size of these devices for a custom, portable device. Im surprised and pleased how quickly they acquired a cold signal with no atlass in memory.

I resisted the urge to dock them a star for missing documentation as it's possible that they're selling into a veriical market with fixed pinouts and signalling demands that doesn't need the level of detail that electronics buffs or robotocists or self-driving vehicles or other applications will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quickest GPS I've Used for FPV

I busted my last BN220 GPS. The M10 based chips found in the M100-5883 are the newer chips and reach more sats. Additionally, I was looking for a GPS with a compass and the M100-5883 has a compass.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
Its small, about the same size has a BN220 GPS, one of the more common GPS in the FPV hobby. The pinout for the wires is printed on the underside of the GPS, something a lot of GPS don’t have. It includes the connector (note make sure it goes in the correct way (see the photo, it can be plugged in either way physically, but with the GPS lying on its back, the black wire should be all the way to the right, see photo).
1s time plugging it in, I got 5 sats inside in my basement in about 30 seconds and a 3d lock in about 45 seconds, that is pretty fast for a cold start indoors.
Some Pros and Cons
PROS
Quick satellite acquisition time and 3d lock
Small size
Works on 3 volts and 5 volts
Has Compass
Affordable
CONS
Wish solder pads were more clearly labeled as such.
OVERALL
Given that this is very small, picks up sats really quick, has a compass, and is affordable. This is going to be my new go to GPS and compass combo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great performance, but documentation is a QR code
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024
10Hz is a bonkers-high refresh rate. I'm currently using this for land-based projects, so don't really need data updates that aggressively, but it's an appreciated option. Satellites are quick and plentiful to connect.

The 5883 compass communicates on i2c at 0x0D (13) while the GPS comes out over UART. Even without any config or init command, the u-blox GPS module immediately starts blasting out data. This wound up being problematic in my environment, but I can set it up later so we only power the module once the MCU is ready for it.

I would prefer physical documentation over a QR code; I don't enjoy using phones. The little connectors are reasonably sturdy and allowed me to disconnect and reconnect multiple times without breaking; I wound up cutting one end and soldering wires to my board, which worked out well.

Overall, the device has been fun to work with; it's always neat to be able to work with data coming from space!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Upgrade for My FPV Drone
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024
I recently upgraded to the M100 Mini GPS Compass Module with the M10 chip for my FPV drone, and I'm thoroughly impressed! The three-mode positioning support (GPS, Galileo, and BDS) ensures that I get reliable location data no matter where I fly.

The installation was smooth, and it integrated seamlessly with my existing setup. The accuracy and responsiveness have improved significantly, which has made racing and navigation a lot more enjoyable. Plus, the compact design doesn’t add unnecessary weight to my drone.

If you’re looking to enhance your UAV experience, this GPS compass module is definitely worth considering!

The "M100_Mini and M100-5883 GPS Compass Module Upgraded M10 Chip Support GPS, Galileo, BDS Three-Mode Positioning for FPV Drone Fixed-Wing UAV Racing" matches the listing details.

Although these work great for RC, they also do well for scientific research. With a plethora of data on how to use them on the web, these can easily be programmed with micropython for the Raspberry pi pico or any other microprocessor of choice.

Absolutely worthy of recommendation
