4.0 out of 5 stars Good for photographing coin or stamp details.

CD:
The "amcap" program on the CD doesn't install anything, it just runs the program. If you want to have it on your PC, copy it to a new folder and make a shortcut for your desktop.

On the microscope:
To switch between Photo, Video, and View modes, long push the "Menu" button to cycle through the choices.
A video camera, a camera, and a playback triangle appear in the upper left.
To take a photo or video, push the OK button. It will start and stop a video, or save a photo to the Micro-SD card.

To use the PC:
Click to USB settings:
When USB is on "Disk Drive" or "PC-Cam," all functions stop on scope.

1) Disk Drive:
Connect the USB-C data cable (included)
The Micro SD-Card now appears as a USB Drive (X:) with a DCIM folder on the PC, giving access to the files saved to the SD-Card.

2) Set USB to "PC Cam" and connect USB-C data cable (included)
Run "amcap v3.0.9.exe" on the CD
Under "Devices" select "General - UVC"
Options/Preview to view what the microscope camera sees on the PC screen.
You can then take a photo or capture a video in the PC program.

3) To get back to the microscope controls, unplug the USB-C cable. If you want to power the microscope from the PC, but not have it switch to PC-Cam or Disk Drive mode, change the USB setting to "Charging mode."

It has a built-in battery but I don't know how long it lasts before recharging. It recharges with a USB-C cable.

It comes with a 32GB Micro-SD card which is the maximum size it can read (MicroSD is called "TF" in China. They're the same thing.).

This is a bit easier to use than a 10x lupe as the lighting is taken care of for you. You can get a bit of size change by raising and lowering the lens and camera, but not much - closer is larger and up is smaller. The entire coin won't show up on the screen.

There's a light dimmer dial on the right side of the screen that helps with clarity if you've got some reflection or contrast problems.

If you know where that mint mark is, this will help find and read it, or differentiate an "S" from a "D" on a worn coin. The strength of this item is its ability to take a picture to document the coin, but a lupe is easier to use just to examine a coin or stamp.

Negatives: Can't see entire coin. Reflections can cause exposure problems. Always have to refocus.
Main positive: Good for detail photos.

4 stars - not as useful as I had hoped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really nice unit for the price
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024
I've tested similar microscopes in this price range that didn't include the screen, so for the price and the "all-in-one" (no laptop/phone required) usability this is a win. Magnification is fixed, focus is adjustable, and the stand gives you some additional flexibility by moving farther/closer to what you're looking at. The screen is clear, and with a MicroSD card installed you can record video or still pictures right on the unit. LED lights build into the camera do a good job illuminating your workpiece, and the brightness is adjustable.

Charging and interfacing to a PC is a just a little wonky - you can only use the 'scope with the screen, or with your PC, but not both at the same time. By default it's in "camera" mode, so if you plug it into a PC just to charge it, you'll still lose the screen - you have to turn it on and switch it to charge-only mode BEFORE you plug it in. You can also set it in "drive" mode to download videos/images you've stored on the MicroSD card. There is no support for Android/IOS devices, only PC/Mac (although given it's a similar build to other scopes that will work with Android, you might be able to get it working - I haven't tried yet).

Really nice addition to the workbench.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't forget to remove the dust cap!
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2024
One of my Christmas gifts at the tender age of 10 was a Gilbert Microscope set. Although it was a beginner kit, it opened my eyes to the miniature things around me. I looked at salt and sugar and compared their structures. Also, hairs from my head, wings of a fly, drops of blood pricked from my finger, and more were observed.
That microscope relied upon reflected light from a small mirror to illuminate the slides. The mirror needed to be readjusted whenever the microscope moved or the light source changed. Bright light was helpful. Years later, I obtained a similar microscope with the added advantage of having a battery powered light source built in.
Those microscopes gradually failed when parts no longer worked as intended.

Enter the GOCHIFIX DM4 4.3 inch LCD Digital Microscope:
Battery operated, Rechargeable, Digital.
Photo and Video capable with ability to store for later retrieval.
And more...

While I would still rate this as a beginners' model, oh my, how things have changed.

Since my finger was handily available, I first looked at my fingernail under the scope. Ridges, cuticles and calouses were instantly magnified showing the small details.
The fine print of the operating manual showed the fuzzy edges of the letters on the paper which appear crisp while viewed normally.

Viewing coins was how the microscope was promoted. It is much more than that and many possibilites remain to be explored. I've included some coin photos with this review. One shows the coin with dust cap on. The others are various shots at different magnification (without the dustcap) where the aperture is moved up and down.

The manual is adequate. It concentrates mostly on setup, button control and connection to a computer. Assembly of the parts can be deduced from the line drawings.
Power-on defaults to video.
A 32gb TF card is included for saving data.

The force of pressing buttons shifts the view slightly which shows up especially in video mode.
I did not install the software which is included on a small CD-ROM disc and used with the "PC CAM" setting. I did explore files via "DISK DRIVE" mode which worked great.

For best results *there is a tabbed dust cap that must be removed for optimum viewing.* Replace it when not in use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, works well
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024
I like that it has a built in battery, that opens it up for a lot more use not near an outlet. It took a little trial and error to figure out how to get different ranges of magnification but once I figured out it, it works really well.
