About this item

When a running battle brings the Fafnir home to earth, it ends with the death of a trusted friend—and a new focus on what comes next for Van and his crew.

The Guild is rotten. It must be changed. It must be healed. But to do that, Van will have to marshal resources on a scale he's never considered, and that means calling in favors from friends.

With the Schegith fleet in training, and the Conoku itching to get back into the fight, Van has a clear plan for what he has to do—which is the one thing he doesn't want to do.

The time for war is here. The time for change is now.

A new leader is needed, and Van will discover if he can take control of Yotov's criminal empire—and save the victims across known space.

The first part of the book is well done, but low to mid level action. The plot flows well. Towards the end of the book the action takes a turn for the better and ends in an action thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Space cometh to Earth!

While the Equal Grasp is slowly attempting to be the face of Space for the Earth, Van decides to beat them at their own game and plans to convert his farm into a base for interplanetary commerce. Yotov and the Equal Grasp are of course not happy about this and try to stop them by any means possible...
There is plenty of intrigue and suspense as Van decides to be offensive rather than defensive... Politics of course rears its ugly head as well as sabotage and frontal assaults and of course Mr. Forrester making offers for Van to join in with Equal Grasp. Much of this book is set on Earth or the surrounding space as Van executes his plans.
A fun and entertaining read leaving you waiting to see what will happen next....

This is the 22nd book in the Backyard Starship. Van, Torina, Netty, Netty B, are attempting to counter the influence of the Empty Grasp on earth. They have suffered losses, but persist, taking on the corrupt Guild, and those who would exploit the people of earth. The revolting practice of the Empty Grasp of kidnapping the people of earth, then converting them to chips to operate mining equipment, or sanitary facilities, a cheap alternative to an AI, has commenced, and Van is determined to protect the people of earth from the practice he has committed so much of his life to, amongst the stars. Is the earth and the peoples of the earth ready to enter into the community of planets? Van decides he must find out, as the Empty Grasp has forced his hand. This is a great tale, with fun characters, courage, love, gain, loss, violence, and ultimately, love of family.

Yet another fabulous story from two very funny writers.
Having read all the series, I pre order as soon as it’s out so I don’t miss the action, the drama and most of all the fun.
This has built into a very enjoyable tale of fights, greed deception as well as humour, passion and some very real sounding space activity. So real it could be, almost true.

I'm at the point where it's time to start over from the beginning of the series. Mr. Maggert can't write these nearly as fast as I read them, which is too bad. :-)

Unlike other series', I have no difficulty picking up right where the prior book left off. I love the characters, the humor, the tech and the story. No spoilers here, just praise for what I really hope is a storyline that continues on and on.

If you are looking for fun, punchy Sci Fi, with a humorous edge, this is it! It's not Deep Thought Sci Fi, but it's fun to read!
