About this item

From The Brighter the Light author Mary Ellen Taylor comes an uplifting tale of hope and love between a mother and daughter as they learn that life is a masterpiece in the making.

When artist Dani Manchester learns she’s slowly losing her vision, she becomes unmoored. Her ex-husband died only months before, leaving Dani and her preteen daughter grief stricken. Suddenly, the life Dani built for her family on the Outer Banks feels like a painful reminder of all they’ve lost.

On a whim, Dani sells her waterfront home and buys an old farm inland near the Virginia state line. But Dani’s daughter recoils at the sudden, drastic change. The Outer Banks’ sun-swept beaches, pink dawns, and savage storms are all she’s ever known.

But Dani is resolute, and the pair move to Virginia to embark on a challenging renovation. That summer, their efforts to turn a run-down silo into an art studio bring forth new friends, new loves, and new challenges.

As mother and daughter navigate the fiercest storm of their lives, they learn that instead of waiting for the skies to clear, they can withstand the wind and rain, so long as they do it together.

This was a wonderful story of the paths of grieving, especially for Jackson, Dani, Bella and Reggie. Loved all the characters and could picture the scenery. First book I read by Mary Ellen Taylor and highly recommend it.

This story was lovely. It started slow but became intriguing. I liked the characters, the dealing with grief and the setting. I would read another of Ms. Taylor’s books.

A good choice for everyone. It’s very honest about loss as it impacts each person differently. Hopeful rather than maudlin. Very well written.

I had a hard time getting into this book. The writing is professional and engaging, and the author deals gently with a sensitive subject: = do it at all. I found huh hmmmthe pace to be a bit slow and dragging, but realize that a snappier pace would be wrong, given the subject matter.

My main problem with this book is that I did not like the main character, Dani. I think the author wanted to present this character as being strong, independent, beautiful, and self-contained. Someone e who needed to learn how to open up, be in touch with her feelings. I felt she was aloof and cold, judgmental of others and closed off. I had no admiration for her. All the characters changed and grew throughout the story, and I usually like that. But in this book, I didn't like the characters much. Dani was the only one I felt irritation towards, and I didn't dislike the other characters, but I didn't especially like them either.

Perhaps others can connect with the characters better than I did, and actually like them. I found that a character driven book is no good if I don't feel an affinity towards the characters. That was my experience with this book.

So many layers around the topic of grief, our journey, letting go and fresh starts. Families are created in many different ways and the author explores both the ideas of families and the grieving process for each person in the story. A bit of a romantic budding relationship is thrown into the mix and the reader will find themselves identifying with one of several themes explored. The ending left you wanting to know more of where the story would extend. First time reading this author and I enjoyed the facets of the characters, the themes and the layers the reader got to unpack as the book progressed.

For anyone who’s lost a loved one we all know how the hurting can come like a freight train when you least expect it. The people were likable and complex. A good read.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Was light and had a good story to tell. At times I felt like I was there with them. Loved how they let go of their grief
