About this item

Make room in your beach bag for this great summer read

The perennial New York Times bestselling author returns with an emotionally resonant novel that illuminates the power of friendship in women’s lives, and is filled with her trademark wit, poignant and timely themes, sassy, flesh-and-blood characters, and the steamy Southern atmosphere and beauty of her beloved Carolina Lowcountry.

Few writers capture the complexities, pain, and joy of relationships—between friends, family members, husbands and wives, or lovers—as beloved New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank. In this charming, evocative, soul-touching novel, she once again takes us deep into the heart of the magical Lowcountry where three amazing middle-aged women are bonded by another amazing woman’s death.

Through their shared loss they forge a deep friendship, asking critical questions. Who was their friend and what did her life mean? Are they living the lives they imagined for themselves? Will they ever be able to afford to retire? How will they maximize their happiness? Security? Health? And ultimately, their own legacies?

A plan is conceived and unfurls with each turn of the tide during one sweltering summer on the Isle of Palms. Without ever fully realizing how close they were to the edge, they finally triumph amid laughter and maybe even newfound love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great summer read. Well done, DBF.

I've read all of DBF's books and, in my opinion, this is one of the best. The story line held my interest throughout and the characters this time out were wonderfully developed.

As is her habit, Ms. Frank includes the mention of a large number of commercial enterprises, ranging from Costco to Krispy Kreme. I'm not sure if she does this to make her characters more easily relatable to her readers, because of genuine loyalty to the companies' products, or if she actually receives compensation for what amounts to free advertising, but her practice of doing it is once again front and center from cover to cover. It doesn't bother me - in fact as a frequent visitor to the Charleston area, I appreciate the mentions of the local restaurants. After reading this book I'll be sure to visit places like the Obstinate Daughter and Tavern and Table on my next trip to the glorious Holy City.

As is also her habit, she includes another ex-husband in the story. This time, though, he's not a complete jerk who gets bashed throughout the book, and actually becomes a semi-sympathetic character in the end. One of the most interesting characters in the book is the 99 year old Miss Trudie. DBF does such a fine job of developing this character that I think most readers will be very moved by Miss Trudie's fate in the book.

I rank this one right alongside Dorothea Benton Frank's finest novels. Well done.

Good book! The setting is the south and the coastal area.
The characters are many and you follow their lives. Good friends that deal with life issues.

A fun read! A bit over the top sometimes in the character "saint like qualities" of "the men" as they fit into their women's lives but the women characters were perfectly real and fabulous! Southern culture steeped in diplomatic manners and etiquette seemed an appropriate contrast to the ethical dilemmas brought up in the story about love, sustainability, marijuana , marriage, and more. Overall a delightful read that makes you sad the story ends.

There is always something special in Dorothea Benton Frank books that really speak to me. I attribute it to the fact that I grew up in South Carolina but when th list is made of groceries purchased at the Pig when you have been away for a short time or a long time are the same in her books as the ones especially that you purchase when returning or the ones you take to your children who live in other states there has to be a connection. I always enjoy the humor, the scenery, and the food! Charlotte Murray

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read!

Enjoyed this book so much. I only gave it a 4 star rating because she used the F word in it and that was just not necessary. Why does every writer these days have to use the F word to make a point? It is ridiculous and, makes the writer appear to be so unimaginative and simple. There are so many beautiful words in the english language that can be used to emphasize a point. Anyhow, the story was sweet and tender. I loved her sensitivity to elderly people. That meant so much to me, since I have aging parents. And, it was just a fun read, with all of the "ladies" finding someone to love. Great ending!

I loved this book. The quirky ladies were very entertaining and real! It is timely for my siblings and I. Dealing with an elderly parent, not nearly as much fun as Trudie. Love to see older people still interested in everyone and their lives. No matter what the problems were they had, rallied around each other lending support and love.
