About this item

From two-time Edgar Award–winner and New York Times bestselling author James Lee Burke comes a thrilling novel—now available in ebook—that pits Dave Robicheaux against the worst opponent he’s encountered yet.

It’s out there, under the salt of the Gulf of Mexico, off the Louisiana coast—a buried Nazi submarine. Detective Dave Robicheaux of the New Iberia Sheriff’s office has known of its existence since childhood, when he was terrified by nightmares of the evil Nazi sailors just offshore. Then, as a teenager he stumbled upon the sunken sub while scuba diving—but for years he kept the secret of its watery grave.

But decades later, a powerful Jewish activist wants the sub raised, and Robicheaux’s knowledge puts him at the center of a terrifying struggle of conflicting desires. A neo-Nazi psychopath named Will Buchalter, who insists that the Holocaust was a hoax, wants to find the submarine first—and he’ll stop at nothing to get Robicheaux to talk.

With colorful characters, flawless plotting, and devilishly clever dialogue,
Dixie City Jam is a spine-tingling suspense novel you won’t want to miss!

I have been reading Burke novels since his debut in the writers’ genre. He is a poet in the disguise of commanding prose. He has soul. He is one of the great ones.

Another round of Dave Robicheaux getting beat up, shooting bad guys and describing the Louisiana climate. Lots of bad guys including Mafia types, white supremists and drug dealers.
A not so fast paced novel that held my interest despite the hard to believe coincidences. I liked it…it’s fiction!

I have been reading, in order, the Dave Robicheaux series for some time , and Burke is now my favorite author. No contest. Top of the list, for me.
His books are written in such detail. I can "feel" the tension, "smell" the coffee, and "taste" the barbecue sandwiches. I had a "Clete" growing up and we had our own "New Orleans" but Dave takes me back to the Big Easy and reminds me of how I loved my vacations there and long to see it again. Every street, every band, and every cafe described exactly as I remember it and Dave makes me want to go back again and again. Every plot has a twist and turn and it has never ended as I expected...always different.
Someone ( don't remember who) once said “Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader – not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon.” If this is the test...then well done, Mr. Burke...well done.

Liked the characters and their development. Burke's Robicheau has a patient aura. Can't wait to re-read Book 8. Real anticipation.

Excellent prose and description of the scene and characters. I almost feel living in the swamps of Louisiana! The plot has a little bit of magic realism for my taste and the outcome of some situations are too obvious. However I enjoyed a lot this 7th Dave Robicheaux novel and have already started the 8th, Angel Burning.

James Lee Burke is simply the best. He writes like no other. Especially in describing humanity and landscapes of the heart as well as New Orleans

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Writing; Poor Proofreading

I'm truly enjoying the Dave Robicheaux series by James Lee Burke. Mr. Burke is a master in poetic writing that not only paints a very vivid picture of the scene and characters, but also weaves a complex and intriguing story that is next to impossible to put down.

On the other hand, the proofreading is terrible with regard to punctuation. It's difficult to keep pace when periods and commas are placed in seemingly random places, and I have to re-read a sentence or several to figure out what is being written.

Hire me to proofread! I am tons better than whomever is doing it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dark Story
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2024
This is a thoughtful but very dark novel in its review of human evil. But Burke's observations are usually correct and the reason why I read his books. Not many adventure authors take the time to add such meat to their stories.
